Marathon and Stryd... go or no go?

Hi all,
I've been using stryd for about a month now but it was always set to just show my power on my Garmin, pace and the distance was always from the gps. It works just fine for my needs. I've run 4 marathons this one will be my fifth. I had many different Garmin watches on my runs including marathons. Distance reported from gps was always good enough for me around 42.3 - 42.6 km. But now that I have Stryd sensor my question to all of you is.... What would you do? Would you use Stryd as pace and distance for perhaps better distance accuracy or just go as I do to not break anything hehehe
I will be running Stockholm Marathon on Saturday so any thoughts before that are much appreciated ;)
Also should I put my auto calibration to 100 and turn it off or leave it as it is?

Thanks in advance
  • As the saying goes "Nothing new on race day." While that typically applies to clothing and shoes I wouldn't go with a different pacing method either. For me that would have me wondering and second guessing myself the whole time and the last thing I need is to be thinking about anything other than putting one foot in front of the other 18 miles into a race.
  • Yeah, exactly what I was thinking but needed a second opinion hehe
  • Agree on nothing new on race day but also if it isn't broken don't fix it! You say yourself that your Garmin (presume a 935) works fine for pace & distance so what would you be achieving.
Personally I have a Stryd (actually two) but I only use it for pace & distance indoors because, like you, I find distance & pace works fine outdoors and I never "trust" foot pods to work in all scenarios while with GPS you don't need to fiddle with that.

As for the calibration, you should know whether 100 or not is good for you by looking in the foot pod sensor entry assuming you have auto calibration on.

Perhaps though the real question with a Stryd (for the future) is if you should ignore pace & distance and just focus on a power number. Not so sure there as most of my running is on fairly flat terrain and I find a high correlation between power and pace.

    Good luck on Saturday.
  • I was thinking to get exactly 42.195km hahahahaha just kidding 😃

Just wanted to get your opinion because almost everyone says that Stryd is so accurate and so on but like you say Tim I don't want to break anything hehe so I will leave it and relay on GPS as I always do. Thanks Tim
  • I ran my first marathon with my 935 this weekend (and my 8th in total) and could not have been more pleased with its performance. I had one data screen set for HR/Instant Pace/Lap Pace/Distance and a 2nd with Cadence instead of HR. The 3rd screen showed Elapsed Time/Lap Pace/Average Pace/Distance and I switched to that near the end of the race.

Total distance measured 26.17, though I started with the GPS in yellow instead of green. I had everything set up at the start line with a GPS lock but then the watch went back to watch mode, I guess as a power savings feature. I realized it once my corral started moving so then quickly hit start without the GPS re-locking.

The pace readouts throughout the race were terrific, admittedly under mostly visible skies.

To be fair, I PR'd and scored by 2nd BQ during this race so my opinion may be *slightly* affected by that, but I really couldn't be happier with how the watch performed.

    Have a great race!
  • Thanks Patrick, so it's settled will not do anything to my watch and run with Stryd just for power..

Thank you for the response guys appreciated

I'm concerned that when I run my marathon my watch will record something like 26.1 and not put a time in my Garmin connect PR section. "NOPE YOU DIDN'T DO A MARATHON. WE DON'T TRACK RECORDS FOR PERSONAL BEST 26.1 MILE RUNS LOSER"

You have to have faith in your watch... hehehehe

You can just assign a PB to any run in Garmin Connect and enter your actual race time.
