Daily Watch Use

I am considering upgrading to the 935 from the 910xt. One of the features I am looking for in a replacement watch is the ability to wear it all day and still use it for training. I have no doubt that the 935 is excellent when it comes to tracking training. My question to those that have the 935 is, how is it as a daily smartwatch? Do you get notifications as you would expect? Can you access your calendar items from the watch? Is it durable enough to take the bangs and dings from daily wear?

I really like what I see in this watch but want to make extra sure I will be happy with it as a daily "smartwatch" before spending so much money on it. Thank in advance.
  • I wear it all the time. Notifications work fine and calendar too.
I would not walk into a wall with it on and some people prefer to have a screen protector but otherwise just be careful with it as any watch and should be fine.
  • Thanks Tim. This is what I suspected but it is nice to have it confirmed by someone that owns it and uses it regularly. I appreciate your input.

i came from using a Bertucci Field watch as my daily watch for the past 6-7 years and i'm very comfortable now using the 935 as my daily watch. i put a tempered glass screen protector on it just because its screen is less recessed than the field watch actually more valuable than the Bertucci (~100 USD), but its mineral glass seems just as durable.

i am pretty hard on watches, but i don't imagine the polycarbonate body will have any issues withstanding the unintended knocks and clumsiness.

i don't use it for calendars, and i turn off all notifications except phone calls, but it works well. (i just don't want to be alerted all the time i have a text message. it's nice, however to see if it's my wife calling or a SPAM call rather than fish my phone out of my pocket)

for me, it's the smart watch i need. surely, it doesn't do everything an Apple watch can do (i use an iPhone), but the built in Analog watch face is elegant with a second sweep, there are tons of Connect IQ watch faces out there to customize the look of the watch, and it is much more functional as a running/athletic watch than the Apple watch. to top if off, the biggest reason i love the watch is the battery life. i can get in about 4 hours of GPS activities each week and could probably see 2+ weeks of use on one charge. (although i usually charge about once a week when the charge drops below 50%)

    highly recommended.
  • I've just sold an Apple Watch Series 2 to get a Forerunner 935. I've only had the 935 for a few days so my views are limited but certainly the notifications are fine. I get to see who it's from and at least the start of the message which is plenty to know whether I need to reach for my phone or if it's something that can wait for later. I've had very little in my calendar these last few days so can't comment on how useful the calendar widget is.

There's a small lip around the edge of the screen which should protect it if you knock it against anything flat but I can't comment about how scratch resistant it might be.
  • I've been wearing the 935 for almost a month as a daily watch and I really like its form factor, lightness, understated look and battery lifetime.

Notifications work fine. In rare occasions, with multiple WhatsApp notifications from the same group only the first unread message pops up on the watch and the newer ones can not be accessed (and when I dismiss the first one the others are also dismissed), but thats ok since I'm reading longer conversations on my phone anyway.

Phone notifications are really nice. I especially like accepting a call by pressing a button on the 935. Far easier than swiping over my phone.

Calendar events are displayed, however I think the presentation of events is not as good as it could be, e.g. it's ignoring the different colors from my Google calendar. And the detail view does not show a single additional piece of information than the condensed view, or am I missing something?

Concerning durability: I don't know if the glass is really mineral crystal glass or just acrylic plastic. And it seems there is not a single source on the Internet that clarifies on this. Neither the Garmin website nor DCR, and no one else cares. Sigh. But since the material attracts fingerprints like crazy anyway, I've put a matte finish screen protector on it so the glass is now protected, smudges almost go unnoticed and the impact on readability is minimal.

In summary I would say the 935 is the best serious sports watch I've ever had for daily wear. Now if the 935 improves as much in terms of GPS accuracy as the Fenix 3 did over time, that would be perfect (although I'm using Stryd for accurate pace & distance measurements anyway).
  • I'm a girl with a tiny wrist and I've been wearing my 935 every day and night for the last 8 weeks as my smart watch, activity/sleep tracker and sport watch and I love it, it's so comfortable. You can set it up to receive any notifications for apps that your phone can receive so you are not limited to certain apps like other smart watches.

Events from your phone's default calendar can be seen in the widget for that day and the following day and I get notifications of events but you can't see any detail of the event, just subject, time and location. But honestly, it would not be practical to see the entire thing on a watch. It's nice to just get the alert of the event and then you can look at it on your phone. If you have your Garmin Connect account connected to your calendar app you can see your workout schedule also, but you can't start a workout from here, you have to go into the Training Calendar for that. It's nice to see what's coming up though.

I wouldn't ordinarily put a screen protector on a Garmin because Garmin screens are notably durable and I've never scratched one, but in choosing to wear this every day and not just for activities I did put a tempered glass protector on my 935. It is worth it just for eliminating fingerprints alone, but it also makes me feel better not being afraid every time I bump it which is inevitable if you wear it every day. Glass screen protectors are cheap.

It's not going to have all the smart watch features of something that is meant to be primarily a smart watch like an Apple Watch, but what I tell people is this: If you are looking for a smart watch with a few running/sport functions, get an Apple Watch. If you are looking for a running/sport watch with a few smart watch features, get a Garmin. And I think this Garmin has more than a few smart watch features.
  • Just the fact that I don't have to charge the 935 daily (I couldn't tell you the last time I charged it. Probably last week at some point?) makes it a more useful watch to me than the S3 or Apple Watch. Realistically most people just use the notifications on them, and that function is present on the 935 ;-)

So basically, another +1 for it's a great daily watch, even thus it's not normally intended as such.
  • I am also wearing it on a daily basis and am happy with the notifications it displays. Especially in meetings I don't have to grab my phone all the time as I can see if a call or mail is important enough.
I have ordered a glass screen protector as I am also worried of scratching the glass. Even if I wasn't, the fact it shows fingerprints immediately would annoy me also too much over time. Easy and cheap solution to get a screen protector.

I would recommend it (I am working in a commercial business environment and just ordered a leather quickfit band so it matches the rest of my outfit during day). The silicon band is then used for sports.
  • I wear mine 24x7, and love it. I also have a tempered glass screen protector on it, as it really does eliminate the fingerprints and smudges dramatically. I also had cracked my 230 screen, so am paranoid about bumping it on stuff.

Can only speak for iPhone, but configuring notifications is very easy. I pretty much only allow texts, calls and calendar reminders... disable most other app notifications to come through to the watch (badge only on the phone).

I am surprised to see you indicate that 935's GPS accuracy needs improving on. In my experience, it is up there with the best I have seen (V800/A3P).
