@Garmin : Double Light button - new feature request

There are 2 light buttons if device shows time. Left side on top. And right side on bottom.

The function is exactly the same:
If I press the button, light turns on and turns off after some seconds.
It is also possible to turn off light by pressing the button once again.

How about a new feauture? The feature: "Show light while while pressing right button on buttom". Meaning: Just getting light WHILE pressing button.
  • Are you talking about the back button on the right?

The back button isn't a light button. There is a feature you can turn on/off that turns on the light when you press ANY button, which is why the back button lights up when the time is displayed; it has no other function at the time but is still a button press. Implementing your feature would be messy because it would turn the back button much more complicated. "Only when displaying time, and only when one feature is turned off and one feature is turned on". Good functional design has a back button ALWAYS doing the same function on all screens. You don't want users confused why their back button won't light up their weather widget when they hold it down, or have their watch start confusing single clicks with continuous clicks if you implemented it everywhere

Consistent button/feature behavior is pretty important

Agreed. But customer wants it! :D

Let's forget the philosophical value of having fine-grained control for the user. What's the point of only getting light while pressing that button, as opposed to the light staying on for several seconds after the button has been released? It's not going to adversely affect battery life all that significantly.

    But customer wants it! :D

Not a good enough reason, and I say so as a fellow customer who doesn't incidentally work for Garmin or have shares in the company. When people (i.e. my peers and equals) want and ask for more, the default position ought to be putting them back into their box if they're not also offering to pay more in exchange for what is asked for at the same time.
  • Remarkably your wish can sort of be done.

Set the Back hotkey to be Backlight !

This actually seems to bring up the Backlight settings but no doubt this could be useful for some!

It also illustrates that fixing the functionality of holding down buttons largely isn't possible because of Hotkeys although personally if I want the Light on/off then the Light button serves the purpose well enough!!!
  • Tim, could you please confirm that setting the Back hotkey to be Backlight will cause the backlight to switch on when the Back button is pressed and to switch off immediately after the Back button is released, ignoring/overriding the backlight timeout setting?

No - it seems to bring up the Backlight settings menu! However if one of settings is turn on with key presses then pressing said key turns on the backlight ...
  • For me, I just have a setting for the backlight so it goes on with any key press. It's on a f5/f5x, but I'll bet it's there on the 935 too.

It is and think it is a default anyway.
  • This is wrong. The Back-Button always activated lights. If I disable the option from Backlight->General Use->Keys & Touch->Off then all other Buttons keep the Display dark. Except for the Light-Button (as intended) AND the Back-Button (very annoying). This is very bad because it is now impossible to use the Watch without activating a backlight. Please fix that!

I don't need the requested feature, but would not mind if it was implemented also - if long press Hot Key options on the Back-Button remains for others.

But stating Back-Button is just a Button and activates Light like any other Button is plain wrong.
