Fellrnr is getting rediculous...

Fellrnr has done some initial testing on the Forerunner 935 and he says gps accuracy is in line with the Fenix 5, meaning very poor gps accuracy...
I've done some testing and I ran 10 times the same 8km run, both with the V800 and the Forerunner 935. All 10 times, the V800 and F935 were within a max of 30 meters, which I find very good!
I had 1 sec recording, GPS + Glonass on. With Glonass off, the difference was bigger.

I used to take Fellrnr very serious. But since he got his non-disclosure (paid?) deal with Suunto, he is getting more and more rediculous! Especially when, according to him, after a software update, the gps accuracy of the Suunto went from extremely bad to extremely good! As good as the Polar V800! Unbelievable!

And now he states the F935 has very poor gps accuracy while I think it's great!

Who is still taking this man serious???

Booooo Fellrnr!
  • I didn't realise anybody still bothers to read his reviews.
  • Suunto had the dubious honour of probably the most damning product review I can recall by DC Rainmaker recently. I guess they need some help.

Pity nobody else can run his route to compare.

Anyway my take from his reviews is that if you want "GPS accuracy" then ditch GPS (I guess he knows where he is going) and get a foot pod.

Ironically GPS accuracy does not seem to effect his watch ratings. Last time I looked the Epix came out top (a product that clearly did not hit the mark) despite not having great GPS accuracy by his method.

I'm considering a foot pod (Garmin one) even when calibrated will it still be functional on say a 5km trial run, where my stride and cadence will be mixed?

  • Agree fellrnr has "jumped the shark", too bad he has a lot of great information and tools he has developed (love his foot pod calibration tool).

The one thing he gets very right IMHO is that the Stryd is the best foot pod out there. Uncalibrated it is reasonably accurate (within 3% for me and I am on the high error side compared to others) and calibrated and tested on a track it was less than 1% error. I use it for trail running, and while difficult to judge accuracy in those conditions an out and back route of 10 miles (5 miles in and 5 miles back) ended within 50 feet of the start, so that seems highly accurate to me for distance as I am sure I did not run the exact same track in and back.

I was only talking about gps accuracy, not the footpods.
  • Geez, all the people who love to jump all over Jonathan when he's doing this stuff for? Oh yeah, free.

Yes, he received a Suunto Spartan Ultra from Suunto for the low, low price of what? Oh yeah, an NDA. So when he does any testing of anything new he can't talk about it. Doesn't sound very free to me. An NDA, by its very nature, is very limiting. Kinda the opposite of free, isn't it?

How many devices has he tested over the years that he's paid for? Looks to be quite a few. He's doing something that nobody, not one person on these forums, is doing. Lay off the dude, else you'll find that type of resource drying up when he's sick of reading about the whining.

What, not even DCRAINMAKER, who makes a (fair) point of stating that he buys his own devices to keep after testing? You can argue that Jonathan does his testing differently from Ray, or even that you prefer Jonathan's methodology and focus, but still doesn't give him the exclusive moral high ground to which you alluded.

Please. DCR gets his to test from the companies, then purchases afterwards. Jonathan, at least by his own words, personally purchases devices to test first, without the benefit of saying "Well, this one sucked so I won't be purchasing for myself." Nice way to bring DCR into the discussion when it wasn't he I was referring to when I wrote "He's doing something that nobody, not one person on these forums, is doing." Yes, DCR will pop his head in every once in awhile; he wasn't to whom I was referring.

I appreciate that Jonathan does his testing differently, and has a different methodology than Ray. I appreciate that he's yet another data point for me, and countless other people, to reference when looking at these devices. I don't take his word as gospel, nor do I take Ray's as gospel. More information for me, and I'm good with that.

Moral high ground, eh? I think you're reading into things a bit too much.

You said “not one person”. Ray is active on these forums, I linked to his member profile, and anyone can see when he last posted just to confirm it isn't an account that has been dormant for years. You made a blanket statement, and it only takes one counter-example to prove you wrong. That's just logic. Whether you actually intended to exclude DCRainmaker from your statement is irrelevant; I was only addressing the statement how you wrote it, and if you wish to acknowledge your error and retract/revise it, that's fine by me.

After all, this is a discussion, and we're in the right place for such.

I now have a Garmin 935 I'm testing. So far, it exactly what you'd expect based on the Fenix 5X. http://j.mp/2r3zz2j
