training status 935 & edge 520

Garmin...I'm a 935 & edge520 owner, I trust in your new training status application, but it doesn't works when I ride my bike using edge 520. And so what the application says isn't true!!!
I don't want to sell my edge 520, but if I have to use always my watch... I don't need the edge anymore!
Please, make it possible to load the workouts from edge...
  • You have to use your 935 for everything you do for the training status to be fully effective.

I have an Edge 520 too and normally record my rides on both. I then "choose" which one to upload first so that one is used on Strava.

With the 935 as long as you save the activity then the training status will update.
  • Why doesn't Garmin using the backend as the central place for training status / load and feed it out to all the devices. Pretty basic stuff from a programming perspective.

Why do they think people only own one device ?
  • If baffles me too but the "sync" is only one-way "up" to Garmin Connect and never back "down" to other devices. Which means it isn't really sync at all, at least as far as multiple devices go.
Owning the entire ecosystem but then not having it properly sync to devices that they themselves have made is just bizarre.

We have discussed this sort of thing before and thought it maybe due both to Firstbeat licensing issues, that not all devices have the same feature set in this regard and the more practical element that this generally requires more information (like RR HR recording) than is generally included in FIT files so the computations "have" to be done on the device.

Hopefully, in time, there will be a version of "True Up" for this sort of stuff which at present is for step counting and that does combine steps from multiple devices into one overall number for you. So actually there is some "back down" stuff...
  • As you say Tim, it's about the First Beat licensing which is done by device. I hope that they can do a True Up sort of thing for these performance measures. Surely the processing done on the server (Connect) side can see that a device with the appropriate licensing is associated with the users account and even if the performance indicators aren't pushed to the devices that aren't licensed for them work outs/rides/etc. done with an different device can be processed on the back end and pushed to the users profile and end up on the device that does support it.

Maybe that requires them to change from a per device license to a per user one. Seems to me though that by buying one device that is licensed for these measures should supply that privilege to all devices registered to that user. But that's just what I want as a user and might not be something that either Garmin or First Beat are willing to do... Yet.
  • I was working with the Forerunner Beta Team on some Vo2 max issues I was having and I brought up the scenario of having Vo2 consistent across devices and I did get a response back so here's hoping

"PS: We are working toward a solution for the multiple devices / VO2Max scenario you describe"

    Totally agree and easily done
  • Mind blowing that even though both of my devices (Forerunner 935 and Edge 520) both sync to my garmin connect account, my performance stats only reflect what happens on my 935. Its beyond frustrating to spend this kind of money to have these features and realize they don't really work together. Garmin needs to solve this pronto.
  • Yep, Garmin just need to stick 200 software engineers on this for a week and sort it out. Only I bet they don’t have 200software engineers especially not ones sitting around twiddling their thumbs. They are not stupid, they will know that it makes sense to amalgamate these results and I bet it’s on their roadmap but I also bet so are a lot of other things. My bet is it will come (and I would love to see it) but it’s not easily done and not going to happen pronto.
  • Unfortunately strava premium and training Peaks really have the edge over Garmin at the moment. Use strava premiums fitness and freshness feature. If you want a free alternative use the excellent stravistix chrome add on for PC or the more nerdy golden cheetah.
