Question to Garmin re Strava Live Segments

How often/when are starred Strava segments synchronized to the watch?
I recently un-starred all but one of several overlapping segments on strava, then made sure to sync my watch with iOS GC, and then ran my route containing those multiple overlapping segments. I had wanted to see the live segment on the watch for the one that I had left starred, but instead it seems that the updates had not synchronized to the watch and I instead was presented with one of the live segments that I had unstarred rather than the one I wanted and had left starred.
Also related question, is the goal for a live segment always the CR for that segment or is there any way to instruct the watch to use my PR as the goal?
  • Your PR is normally the target unless you have not done it before when would be the CR.
I have also seen the target set to that of somebody you follow whose PR is slightly better than yours.
If you have a goal however on a segment it will use that.
You can access the segment on the watch and change the target.

Unstarring segments seem a bit and hit miss. I have seen "delete segment" pseudo files in NEWFILES but not sure always work.
You can always delete a segment on the watch.
  • Thanks Tim- I've never seen how to access/delete/whatever segments on the watch. Where is that??
  • Select the Run or Bike app depending on what type of segment it is.
Then access the menu (press and hold Up button) and then look in Training, Strava Live Segments
  • I think the hierarchy for the default target is thus
    Goal time (if set)
PR of somebody you follow that is the next quicker than your PR (if any you follow have done it and you have a PR)
Your PR (if you have done it before)
PR of somebody you follow that has the slowest PR on it (if any you follow have done it but you have not)
    The CR/KOM

Accessing the segment (as last message) and then the "Race Time" should allow to change the target to whichever of the above are applicable as they should be available on the watch for selection.
  • Awesome, thank you Tim! Any idea if/how a deleted segment (on the watch) can be resynced onto the watch at a later time?

Yes but one "trick" I have found with such segments is to toggle the starred status on Strava so when the star has been put back on, it should trigger the segment file to be sent again to your device.

What I also done if I thought everything was in a mess was to delete the all the segments files in the SEGMENTS folder and the "list" of them in the SEG_LIST folder and let everything resynch again - perhaps using the above trick to initiate a resync.
