Pool swimming

I'm not a regular swimmer but found myself in an indoor pool recently and decided to give the Pool Swim mode a go on the 935. I don't think it was accurate and I'm trying to work out how much of that is my fault and how much is the watches.

I remember reading that it used the accelerometer to pick up one when a length was completed and to push off firmly from the wall. I did that every time, but it seemed to be wildly overestimating distance still - it'd jump up 150m at the end of a length (when the pool length was set to 50m) or not record anything at all at the end of some lengths. It was pretty erratic. By the time I finished it was overestimating by at least 50% (based on a best guess/rough length count.)

Two things that may have played a part - for most of the lengths I wasn't turning and kicking off - I was stopping for a short time, then kicking off forcefully when I started my next length. And some lengths were a mixture of strokes. Could this have played a part in accuracy?

So how much is me, and what can I do to improve the accuracy?

Side issues - in GC I was able to manually go in and change the number of lengths to a more realistic figure but when I exported the .fit file (so I could replace the one on Strava) it still showed the original distance in Strava. Any ideas why?
  • I did quite some swimming in the pool with the 935, and all of them without any missing or added lengths.
I am not very good swimmer and I do not do flip turns.
One important thing is not to change stroke or stop in the middle of length, than the watch thinks you did a new length.
And if you are doing drills you need to select drills on the watch.
I don't use Strava, but if I have any missing lengths I use the http://www.swimmingwatchtools.com/index.
When I change anything there and save it as the fit file the lengths are correct when imported to TP.
  • If you want accuracy from swimming then you need to swim properly. Mixing strokes, stopping to turn and do 'stuff' will confuse the poor thing. If you are going to stop at the end of a length, press the lap button. Do your 'stuff' then press lap when you take off again. Swim each length with a consistent stroke without stopping.

The fault is yours, not the watch's.
  • +1 to what philipshambrook said. I used my hand to wipe my face shortly after pushing off from the wall. Got a mis-counted lap. Note to self: Move the other hand.
  • There are some helpful tips here.
