Course fails to transfer

Dear all, I'm running into trouble sending a course to my Frontrunner. I've previously transferred other courses to the watch successfully, but this one doesn't seem to work..
Both syncing the course through Garmin Express, or through the iOS Connect app fails with the following error: "Some files could not be sent to your device: courses (transfer error)"

The course in question is: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/15166969

Could some of you please attempt to sync the course to their watches, so I know if the problem is specific for my device? Any other advice is also appreciated!

Thanks a lot in advance!
  • I haven't tried to send to my 935, but I do know there is a limit to the number of course points you can have which may be the issue as it's a long course. When you created it, how many clicks did you use to create it?

  • Ooooff, I don't remember ;) But shouldn't Connect automatically reduce the number of points, according to the device the course is transferred to?

[edit] I don't think the number of points is the problem though. If I export the course to a FIT file and put it in the NEWFILES directory on the device, the course loads fine. Elevation and segment data is missing though..
  • No, it doesn't! I had this issue and Garmin support told me to use less course points. By exporting to a FIT I believe you are effectively flattening the route to a level that will load onto the watch

anyway, you have a workaround which is good,

  • Curious how you are exporting a course from GC into a FIT file?
  • Interesting. Just uploaded that course (from the link in the first post) to my Fenix 5 via wifi and it transferred just fine and the map and elevation plot on the watch display just fine too. Just to be sure, I deleted the course and re-uploaded via BLE from the GCM app; again all worked fine. I am on the 3.30 software on the Fenix 5, so wondering if you've tried this since the 935 has gone up to 3.30? If it still doesn't work for y'all, then this might be a bug within the variances of the 935 and Fenix 5 softwares; which I'm sure Tim will be happy to relay to the folks at Garmin.

I'm using the following link: http://connect.garmin.com/proxy/course-service-1.0/fit/course/
Just add the course number at the end and you're good to go! (hint: you can replace 'fit' with 'gpx' or 'tcx' to get the respective file formats)

Could you try to see if the course loads on your FR935 for me? I'd be interested to know, as apparently on the F5 it works (according to Crispin_Ellisdon above)...

Thanks for trying! Much appreciated. I hope some FR935 users can chip in, so we can find out if the problem is related to the FR935 in general, or my device in particular..

    P.S. Yes, I'm on FW3.30
  • Sent it to my 935 via GE OK

Saw the FIT file in NEWFILES before disconnecting from USB and attached it here
  • Works for me by following the link and clicking "Send to device". I get the map and elevation plot.

I have a 935 w/firmware 3.30. When I plug my device in via USB and look at \GARMIN\COURSES, the FIT file for that course is 92 KB, just like the file attached above.
  • Thanks a lot for trying, everyone! It seems the issue is on my end then.. I transferred the FIT file you sent, Tim, and can confirm the file loads perfectly, with Elevation data.

Any idea on how I could try to fix, without resetting my device? If I do reset, do I lose all my Training Status info etc on the watch?
