How to turn off the manual lap button

Anyone know how to turn off the manual lap button on the 935?
  • Tim is right about my lap button problem, it's just a matter of the watch being brand new to me and I need to get used to where all the buttons are. I've always had square watches (310 and 920) so a round watch is a little different. I'll get it. It's just a matter of overcoming the "stupid" that my brain becomes in the middle of a run...lol

I think one of my problems is that you DO use that lap button on a run if you, say, go into the settings during a run to change something like the metronome, you use that button to get out of that setting. So I get confused sometimes when I CAN use it and when I can't.

Thank you to whomever suggested that I wear the watch on the other wrist, that's a great idea, but I tried it and I just cannot get used to having it on my right wrist, having always worn watches on my left. It feels so odd that I just don't want to run like that.

I know my old fenix 3 hr that I used to owned had an option within the activity settings called lap button that allows you to turn on or off the lap button. I'm surprise it's no longer available in the 935 or Fenix 5.

Also, Auto Lock really isn't a good option for me as I want access to the other keys such as the up and down to scrol thru data screens.

That option is there on the Fenix 5. I'm very surprised it's not available on the FR 935, but that does seem to be the case, based on the users manual.

If you search the F5 manual for "lap key" you find this page... "Turning On and Off the Lap Key" http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix5/EN-US/GUID-1F13C9AE-E185-4B78-9170-C3D9B187DEF2.html . It is also mentioned on the "Activities and App Settings" here... http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix5/EN-US/GUID-E03FFCFD-15AD-401E-A15D-715629C6DBF0.html
This is all probably exactly what you remember from your F3HR.

If you search the FR 935 manual for "lap key" you get no "Turning On and Off the Lap Key" page and the "Activities Settings" page ( http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner935/EN-US/GUID-AD8F6E8E-0C95-4B1D-BFE5-8DDF41C95B2D.html ) makes no mention of any such setting.

Seems like a really arbitrary thing to leave out of the FR 935, but apparently it is so.
  • For sure. However, I can't speak for anyone else, but I get 10X dumber and more uncoordinated when I run, especially during the longer runs. :P It's rare for me to hit the wrong button, but I'm sure it will happen to me at least once every few months. If you know you'll never need the lap button for a given activity (say "Long Run" custom activity), some people might like to just disable it.

I cannot agree with you more on this. There are numerous times where I accidentally hit that lap button thinking it's a back to previous screen. I'm sure we are not the only Garmin Forerunner owners who had this issue. It's happed to me on my 235, 735XT and now 935. As I mentioned earlier, the Garmin Fenix 3 version did have this option to disable the lap key, just curious why this is not available in the newer versions of Fenix 5 and 935.
  • Interesting about the F5 functionality. Can anybody confirm it is actually there? If so that might be the first actual functionality difference we have found?
  • Yeah, the problem with the Lap/Back button is that it's context-sensitive. For example, when your run is paused, you might press Back to return to your data fields. But if you impatiently press it twice now you've lapped your activity. (At least the watch will only let you lap your activity once while it's paused).

Another time I was in the map page's pan/zoom mode, and I wanted to press Back to get out of it (just return to normal data fields). Of course I ended up lapping my activity by accident. (IIRC, what happened in this case is the pan/zoom mode timed out, the watch automatically returned to the data fields and I pressed Lap at that exact moment.)

Of course, I had a similar problem with the 630 (infrequently), and Lap/Back aren't even the same button for that watch. >_>. In that case it was 100% user error.

So most or all of this problem is user error for sure, but that's the nice thing about having choices -- the ability to customize things to make up for our own shortcomings. Obviously Garmin has given users a lot of choices to customize their niche sports watches, as opposed to general purpose devices where "simpler is always better". Might be nice to have 1 or 2 more choices.

    Definitely there

I posted an hour-ish ago with links to the applicable user's manual sections for the F5 and FR935 but that post went into moderator limbo (meanwhile this post came right through). I imagine that post may show up here at some point, but in the meantime I’ll repeat the jist of it…

    Fenix 5 Manual Pages:
“Turning On and Off the Lap Key” http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix5/EN-US/GUID-1F13C9AE-E185-4B78-9170-C3D9B187DEF2.html
“Activities and App Settings” http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix5/EN-US/GUID-E03FFCFD-15AD-401E-A15D-715629C6DBF0.html (Note the presence of the “Lap Key” option referenced in the first link)

    Forerunner 935 Manual Page:
(No “Turning On and Off the Lap Key” page exists)
“Activity Settings” http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner935/EN-US/GUID-AD8F6E8E-0C95-4B1D-BFE5-8DDF41C95B2D.html (Note no such “Lap Key” option)

I also always wore my wristwatches on my left arm. However, because the optical HR sensor bump on the FR235 (which I understand is different from the one on the FR935) was causing skin irritation when I wore it on the same spot 24×7, I eventually ‘learnt’ to live with putting the FR235 on my right arm every other day, but it sure felt awkward in the beginning.

just curious why this is not available in the newer versions of Fenix 5 and 935.

Those appear to be different questions.

That still confuses me sometimes, now that I switched to an FR630 after using a FR235 for twelve months. It's especially challenging when my girlfriend still hasn't taken the time to learn the features and set-up options on her (i.e. my old) FR235, and I have to do stuff for her on it.

So most or all of this problem is user error for sure, but that's the nice thing about having choices -- the ability to customize things to make up for our own shortcomings.

Yes, it would be ‘nice’ – but some of the requests I've read on the forum just seem to expect too fine a granularity of control (e.g. disable a single button, or just the touchscreen but not the buttons, when locking a device's controls; making auto-lap a per-custom-workout setting instead of a per-activity-profile setting). In the end, it's always up to the user to learn to deal with the latitude and the limitations in the controls implemented for a device or a piece of technology, and make compromises within that framework, instead of being able to program every aspect of its operation to suit himself/herself without also being the firmware programmer (and having to deal with all the logic and the bugs in the code he/she developed).

For the last several years I've been using watches with the same button layout (220/225/235/Fenix 3) but just yesterday evening for some reason I kept hitting the pause button instead of lap to start my next interval.

I've done that now and then myself.

Sometimes brain wiring just isn't working that day.

Yes, and so sometimes I just have to live with the consequences of my own actions. My consolation is that it's only an activity record, not the activity itself, let alone the end of the world.
  • I mentioned to Garmina about this functional difference with the lap button between the 935 and the F5 and they said were going to check.

Thanks, would be fine to disable it - today I am hiking and got a beep after 3.27km, 4.27km (and this will continue), because I had a look at the navigation screen and pressed the lap key (instead of the back key) after 2.27km of walking...

Even though the Forerunner 935 and fenix 5 devices are very similar there are slight differences that separate the two based on the primary markets they serve, the lap key being the relevant difference in this case. We appreciate the discussion and feedback
