How to turn off the manual lap button

Anyone know how to turn off the manual lap button on the 935?
  • I don't know that you can turn that off, but it sounds like you keep pressing it during a run like I do. I've done it on three runs now intending to scroll through my data screens but I press the button on the wrong side. I wish the up/down buttons were on the right instead of the left.

The Lock Keys and Auto Lock settings ought to disable it (and more).

Would it help to wear your watch on the other wrist, such that the orientation of what is on the ‘outside’ edge (closer to your wrist) and what is on the ‘inside’ edge (closer to your elbow) are reversed?

I know my old fenix 3 hr that I used to owned had an option within the activity settings called lap button that allows you to turn on or off the lap button. I'm surprise it's no longer available in the 935 or Fenix 5.

Also, Auto Lock really isn't a good option for me as I want access to the other keys such as the up and down to scrol thru data screens.

Fair enough, and I surmised as much, but the options available (to me) were to:
    • not answer, and seemingly ignore your question; or
    • guess at what you really want (more specifically), and tell you a blunt no, you can't have what you want; or
    • answer your question as you've literally phrased it, and let you work out for yourself whether it's worth the compromise.

You didn't ask for a perfect solution for your (comprehensive set of) requirements – including what was unstated – and I didn't give you one. :p
  • Not sure I understand why you want to disable it? In 13 years of wearing Forerunners I can probably count on one hand the number of times I have pressed lap "by mistake".

What Linda refers sounds more getting used to how a new watch operates?

I mean you could also press the Stop button by mistake but short of "Auto Lock" you would not want that button disabled either would you?
  • I understand actually. Yes, hitting start/stop by accident is annoying too, but you can usually press start immediately and you haven't changed your activity data much (at least not when you're running). If you hit lap by accident it messes up your splits in GC. And then you have to remember to press lap again to "make up the difference" (e.g. suppose you had 1 km auto-laps for a long run and you pressed lap by accident around 15.45 km -- now you might feel like you have to press lap again at 16 km). That has happened to me when I've done a "workout" within a long run (where certain sections are supposed to be at certain paces). I want the splits to be "correct" to make it easier to look at my data afterwards, so I get a little annoyed at myself if I press Lap by accident.

I think I would find it useful to have the following options:
    - Lock only Start/Stop and Lap (similar to Lock Keys in that it's a temporary toggle).
    - Disable Lap key (persistent setting per activity)

But the first option might be too confusing and unnecessary, so it might be nice to just be able to disable Lap. I can see why they'd take it out tho. Lap key was disabled for a friend's Vivosmart and they had no idea how to turn it on. (I don't know for sure what the default setting is)
  • The best option by far is not to press the wrong button in the first place.

For sure. However, I can't speak for anyone else, but I get 10X dumber and more uncoordinated when I run, especially during the longer runs. :P It's rare for me to hit the wrong button, but I'm sure it will happen to me at least once every few months. If you know you'll never need the lap button for a given activity (say "Long Run" custom activity), some people might like to just disable it.

    Agreed!

Rule of Thumb on a 935 - don't press anything on the right hand side mid activity if you don't want manual laps or false stops.
  • Pressing the wrong button is something that happens no matter how long you've been using a watch or a series of watches with the buttons in the same place.

For the last several years I've been using watches with the same button layout (220/225/235/Fenix 3) but just yesterday evening for some reason I kept hitting the pause button instead of lap to start my next interval. So I ended up with one "lap" being a combination of the lap and the preceding recovery jog and the last interval doesn't show up at all because I ran it with the watch paused.

Sometimes brain wiring just isn't working that day.
