Power meters and the 935

Snap poll - which power meters have you tried with the 935 (or Fenix 5) and have you had any issues like drop outs?

Will start!
Tacx Genius trainer - fine
Wattbike - fine

Rotor Power (the original 2014 version) - OK if put it in top tube bag. Some drop outs if on my wrist on aero bars. Full disclosure - I am very tall (1.95m/6'5") so guess I am further "out" than most.

Guess can also add the Stryd running one - no problems.

I ask am thinking of getting a PM for my road bike (the Rotor is on my TT one) but obviously want to get one with a decent "range".

Thanks
Tim
  • Will look forward to the reports RDM01.

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?362731-Powermeter-dropouts-on-820 does make great reading for Stages users though. It does seem that of all current PMs that this one has the most reported signal strength/drop outs issues.

Well, my FR935 just arrived. Really short test and my Stages powermeter is working with no issues :-) So FR335 got stronger radio signal than F5
  • Kickr power dropout on 935

    Hi guys,

I have been between Kickr forums and Garmin forums but this is driving me mad!! I am getting power dropout on a very predictable pattern around 90 seconds. Power drops to 0 and then back to correct reading. I tried everything from interference, USB extension cable, disable phone connection on Garmin, etc.

The only thing connected to my Garmin is the Kickr, not thing else. I tried the exact same setup using my Edge 820, and there is no power drops. Even when connected to another app like Zwift.

I am pretty sure that there is something not right on the 935 firmware.

    Thoughts???
  • Now that I've had a bit more time with the 935, it drops my P1 Pedals more then the Edge 1000. It's very noticeable during intense intervals, especially since I have it hooked up to the Varia vision. I've had no issues with indoor trainer (Tacx Neo). Power is identical between Zwift recorded on the computer and the watch.

Having owned a Kickr..... Its the kickr
  • P1 fine indoors and outdoors
    Kickr fine

Did you manage to connect to a old or new Kickr? Also, were you able to connect to Kickr over Bluetooth?

I have the old Kickr and can connect to ANT+, but cannot connect over Bluetooth. It detects the device as "Wahoo Kickr A0BD" but does not want to connect. I was hoping to try over Bluetooth as I am experience an extremely annoying power dropouts every 90 seconds or so.

So anyone out there that managed to connect their 935 to an Old Kickr over Bluetooth?

    Thanks
  • Presume you disabled the ANT connection first?
  • Yes, I removed all previous ANT connections to the Kickr and just tried to pair over Bluetooth. Unfortunately no luck.
  • You might want to try pairing again over ANT and, rather than deleting it, set the Status to Off.

I think with dual ANT/BLE sensors, it seems to look for the ANT one first.

There is also the question of what you are trying to pair to. With my trainer (Tacx Smart Genius) and the 935 I pair to it both as a power meter and for speed/cadence as two separate sensor entries.

I don't think the 935 can pair to the trainer per se as a "controllable trainer" like say you can with Zwift or some Edge devices.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately that did not work either. At the moment I paired my 935 to Kickr over ANT as a power meter (not as trainer as it is not supported) and a separate speed sensor.

I have noticed that there is dropouts on power (almost every 90 seconds) and also speed & cadence (intermittent). My Garmin cadence has never caused issues before, so it must be something to do when the 935 is connected to a power meter that causes some issue in signal drops. I get a sense that the Garmin is getting "overwhelmed" with all the ANT sensors it needs to collect data from?

But my core issue remains: I cannot pair 935 to Kickr over Bluetooth. I want to try this to see if there is more reliability in power readings while on my trainer.

    Thanks

This made me think of my last trainer ride from a few weeks ago where I had some drop outs as well on my 935. First gen Kickr. I didn't care too much as my computer with Zwift recorded the data just fine and that's what I post to Strava. Also had my Edge 810 recording from my SRM as well as my Epix recording from a new 4iiii's. (trying to do a DCR comparison to see how accurate my left only 4iiii's is).

But looking back at it more precisely now, the drop outs were on an interval of 95 to 100 seconds between dropouts, which would last anywhere from 1 to 6 seconds.

Also possibly interesting, during intervals where I pushed harder, it often didn't have the dropout.

I was definitely connected via Ant+, not BLE.

So it wasn't just you. Seems to be a Kickr / 935 problem. I often use an Epix to record data from the Kickr and don't remember ever seeing anything like this.
