Power meters and the 935

Snap poll - which power meters have you tried with the 935 (or Fenix 5) and have you had any issues like drop outs?

Will start!
Tacx Genius trainer - fine
Wattbike - fine

Rotor Power (the original 2014 version) - OK if put it in top tube bag. Some drop outs if on my wrist on aero bars. Full disclosure - I am very tall (1.95m/6'5") so guess I am further "out" than most.

Guess can also add the Stryd running one - no problems.

I ask am thinking of getting a PM for my road bike (the Rotor is on my TT one) but obviously want to get one with a decent "range".

Thanks
Tim
  • Thanks for comments so far which look promising for everything bar my obsolete PM.

however where RDM01 did report Stages issues. Hope he sees this and can give us an update.

I'm following this threat! I returned my F5 two weeks ago and ordered a FR935. The delivery will be next week so I'll share my experience here. DC wrote in his FR935 review's comments he tested his unit with Stages and had no issues so I'm optimistic :-) We'll see next week ;-)
  • Will look forward to the reports RDM01.

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?362731-Powermeter-dropouts-on-820 does make great reading for Stages users though. It does seem that of all current PMs that this one has the most reported signal strength/drop outs issues.

No dropouts or weirdness with my first generation Garmin Vector pedals.
  • I reviewed my last few trainer rides (with kickr v2) and can see some signal drop out occurring for my kickr --

It is paired with the KICKR as an ANT+ PM (not ANT+ trainer control or BLE mode)

I am on a tri bike but do most of my riding indoors on the 'hoods', watch on my right wrist.

In some cases I have an Edge 520 @ center of aero bars and haven't seen any issues.

I generally also record with a PC on Zwift (ANT+ stick near floor next to front tire), and an iPhone with Wahoo key and BLE control of the Trainer.
  • I have a lot of dropouts when paired to my Kickr (v1)
I have it paired as a ANT+ PM

To be fair, I get drop outs on my Edge 520 when paired to my Kickr as well.

I haven't paired it to my 4iiii's Precision yet, but I will report back here when I do.
  • For those using indoor trainers are you also paired to apps like Zwift or Trainer Road? If so, any dropouts to those apps?

Should be apparent in Zwift if no power is coming through as you would soon grind to a halt! Also if you have Zwift linked to Strava should get the power trace from what Zwift recorded in Strava.
  • My short answer is 'not at the same level'.

The long answer is that with every Zwift ride I can see a few signal drop outs on my PC (I'd guess 3-5 per hour is typical, not that noticeable without looking at logs because the drop out is so brief, like 1 second)

My ANT+ stick is basically sitting on a cement floor next to my front wheel (extension cable), maybe moving it would help things.

When I compare the zwift log file (using zwiftalizer) to my 935 data I see the 935 has many more drop outs for me.

For the same ride I see what looks like 2 single second drop outs (~30 minute ride) on my PC Zwift, and I see 15+ drop outs on the 935 with at least one of them appearing quite long (~10+ seconds).
  • Mine has been working with my Kickr Snap.
  • The ride I posted above was a Trainer Road workout. I had zero dropouts in Trainer Road but I run TR on my Ipad and connect to the Kickr over Bluetooth.

However, on my last Zwift ride, I had zero dropouts in the Zwift power track and multiple drop outs in the 935 data track. Both devices were connected to the Kickr via ANT+.

So for me, Edge 520 with Kickr = a couple drop outs per ride, FR935 with Kickr = many drop outs per ride.
  • I've only done a few rides with 935 and the P1 Pedals and Tacx Neo trainer. Very few drop outs so far, on the P1, but I haven't been any a long rides yet. The F5 dropped enough to be noticeable especially when it would happen during hard intervals. Overall the difference was less then 1% over an entire ride. I've had no dropouts with the Tacx Neo and Zwift with either the F5 or 935. I use ANT+ for all my sensors.
