Training status

Yesterday I received an "Unproductive" status on the Training status page on my 935. Feedback to Garmin:

1) Pretty darn impressive considering I'm fighting a cold and had slept like complete crap the previous 2 nights which the Sleep screen in Connect confirmed.

2) How can my Lactate Threshold and my Aerobic training effect both been positive/improving during yesterday's activity while the overall status went into Unproductive?

3) OHR and pace and the run overall felt nothing out of the ordinary which means the data I was provided went against the old school rule of listening to your body and instead used the behind the scenes data. Again, pretty awesome, but also perplexing as one could question if you should listen to your body or listen to your Garmin.

4) I'm going to use my HRM-TRI for my next few runs to see what type of variance I get in my data, but to date I have found the OHR to behave just like my old chest strap, with the exception that it takes 5-10 seconds longer for it to come down from peak values at times, for example when transitioning from an uphill to a downhill.

I very much want to be able to utilize these tools as much as Polar users swear by the data Polar provides, however I'm somewhat confused on how to do so with unintended mixed messages being received. I gladly welcome anyone who can chime in on a more scientific level.
  • I just learned "the hard way" that the training status is not updated from the "trail running" app (so lost my last competition from my overall status - a little bit pissed off... :( )

Now what about the "treadmill" app - are activities from this app considered in the training status? Anyone checked it?

    Thanks for sharing your experience!

Treadmill running doesn't affect your VO2Max, so I assume it doesn't affect training status either. VO2Max only works with outdoor (GPS) activities. I think this is because pace from the accelerometer (when running indoors) is not trusted to be accurate enough for VO2Max calculations.

In fact, when your watch is new and you look at the Performance/VO2Max widget, it says "run outdoors for VO2Max", "run with GPS", or something similar.
  • thanks, for VO2max I understand this.
but what about training status? When I run 30 km trail competition or do 5 sessions treadmill per week it is quite annoying when the watch tells me I am unproductive...
    how do you handle this?
  • VO2 Max calculation might be omitted from Trail Run but are you sure your Training Load figure did not change?

I can say go out on the bike with no power meter and won't see any VO2 Max changes but for sure my Training Load changes.

As to how to "handle this" well if you think your training is actually productive then carry on!

I got a new training status for myself today - Recovery. Says fitness same but load down. Bit odd though as my running VO2 Max went up 1 point today.
  • I didn't realise that for VO2 Max to be updated it needed to be a Run rather than Trail Run. Slightly annoying when 70-80% of my running is trail running, but I can (kind of) see the reasons behind that. I've always thought the Training Status updated with trail runs - will have to have a look next time I do one.

One thing I'm finding slightly odd is that the GC app refuses to update with my LT figure. Whilst the website won't update my VO2 max figure. The app shows the VO2 max figure (and the website shows it too, but not on the VO2 max tab - jus on the Training Status tab) and the website shows my LT, so it is all there.

Not a biggy either way, just a bug I presume. The data is there at least.

Is this affected if you use a foot pod for distance while still mapping with GPS outdoors?
  • Will inline-skating with heart rate strap effect the training status?
Or is it only the native running and biking app that does so?

Might be easiest to try it and let us know.

http://static.garmin.com/pumac/Forerunner935_OM_EN.pdf the manual suggests training load is computed from HR data so I suspect any activity should "count" for training load.

This is different to the sport specific measurements like V02 Max which, as we have been discussing, are even off shut off in certain types of runs.
  • Well, my trail run competition of last Sunday with HR data from the RUN strap doesn't show up in the training load charts. How will the algorythm judge what phase I am in if main events like this are not considered? Confusing...

What exactly do you mean by not "show up" ?

    On GC at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/-1/all/last_four_weeks
I get a different training load number each day and it appears to be some rolling number of your last 7 days.

So on the day of your competition what was the training load figure that day and how it did compare to the day before?

Guess also depends what the nature of the competition was. A "short" race probably won't contribute much to training load whereas a longer one probably would.
  • The training load was high (31km run with 750m down and 580m up in 2:23h).

I just realized that the last update of the chart is for 27th April - no new data after that. Hmmm... don't know what to do.

I will restart training today. Maybe I just wait and see what happens.
