Training status

Yesterday I received an "Unproductive" status on the Training status page on my 935. Feedback to Garmin:

1) Pretty darn impressive considering I'm fighting a cold and had slept like complete crap the previous 2 nights which the Sleep screen in Connect confirmed.

2) How can my Lactate Threshold and my Aerobic training effect both been positive/improving during yesterday's activity while the overall status went into Unproductive?

3) OHR and pace and the run overall felt nothing out of the ordinary which means the data I was provided went against the old school rule of listening to your body and instead used the behind the scenes data. Again, pretty awesome, but also perplexing as one could question if you should listen to your body or listen to your Garmin.

4) I'm going to use my HRM-TRI for my next few runs to see what type of variance I get in my data, but to date I have found the OHR to behave just like my old chest strap, with the exception that it takes 5-10 seconds longer for it to come down from peak values at times, for example when transitioning from an uphill to a downhill.

I very much want to be able to utilize these tools as much as Polar users swear by the data Polar provides, however I'm somewhat confused on how to do so with unintended mixed messages being received. I gladly welcome anyone who can chime in on a more scientific level.
  • Yep, dumb trainer. zPower taken from the speed sensor.

I decided to have a play - my HRM (Wahoo TICKR X) can transmit via BTLE or ANT+. Zwift can accept either BTLE or ANT+ (the former through my phone and the Mobile Link app.) And my bike GPS will also connect to BTLE or ANT+.

I've just had the HRM strap connected to both my 935 and my bike GPS. No issues, both providing a reading and recognised changes simultaneously.
So I connected it to Zwift and the 935 - again, both connected without issue - and both via ANT+. I didn't know that you could connect a sensor to several devices simultaneously via ANT+??

Either way it appears to solve my problem...it just seems a bit too easy. I feel like I'm missing something.
  • > I didn't know that you could connect a sensor to several devices simultaneously via ANT+??

Yes that is a big advantage of ANT+ over BLE.
  • I've been "Unproductive" for the past week. I ran a HM on the 15th, took two days off, and I was in "Maintaining". I did a moderately hard 30 min ride on the 18th, which put me at "Productive", have but have since moved to "Unproductive". I did a swim and SS run later in the week (nothing too demanding), and as far as the watch is concerned, I haven't trained since Saturday but have not seen a change in Training Status. (I ran Tuesday and swam yesterday, but recorded on a separate device).

Also, RE: Training Effect while swimming, this is provided when using HRM Swim.

My solution to not wanting to watch the watch tell me I'm being unproductive...I've deleted the Widget. While in theory I think it's great the watch wants to tell me how I'm feeling, in reality my training mileage is only going to ramp way up as Chicago 26.2 training gets underway. I imagine it will report I'm unproductive for quite some time.

I may do the same... after nine days at "unproductive" it changed to "detraining" as of this morning. I recorded an hour ride this morning (albeit a somewhat hard effort) it went back to "unproductive".

Perhaps a restore to allow it to "re-learn" me again may be worth trying.
  • From what I have seen which way your two VO2 Max figures are going has a big influence on the training status.

Logically if you are ramping up the volume of your training for a "long" event like a marathon they will be a period where your VO2 Max goes backwards as you try to get used to the increased load.

So I find whilst this feature is interesting, I am only using it as a bit of guidance and food for thought.
  • Can you copy your activities across from the old watch to the 935 to avoid having to re-train the watch or it doesn't work this way?
  • No, only ones recorded on your 935 willl work

    Thank you Tim
  • From which apps is training status calculated?

I just learned "the hard way" that the training status is not updated from the "trail running" app (so lost my last competition from my overall status - a little bit pissed off... :( )

Now what about the "treadmill" app - are activities from this app considered in the training status? Anyone checked it?

    Thanks for sharing your experience!
