935 Training Status and external services

Hey everyone,

I have just picked up a 935 and am interested in the training status on the watch but wondering how it accounts for external services such as if you record a workout on something else not only like an Edge 820 but also things like Trainerroad and Zwift.

I let the other service create the file and upload to garmin connect so obviously the 935 doesn't see that so I think that would be best way of accounting for this or let Garmin connect calculate the stress but I think this is future work for Garmin.

However, my other idea is also set the watch recording whilst doing other work outs but then what happens when finished?

1. Can I discard the activity and the watch will still take account of the training stress or will it remove it?
2. If I need to save the workout to get the watch to calculate the stress, what happens when I then delete from the watch? Obviously this is to stop double workouts uploading to GC but does deleting the workout from the watch remove the effect of the stress from this workout?

Cheers,

Tom
  • Good and bad news on this front.

At the moment everything for the training stress has to be recorded and saved on the watch. You could put a FIT file say from Zwift or an Edge onto the device but it won't alter the training stress (I have already tried)

However deleting already saved activities has no effect either so you are fine there.
  • Excellent. What about with regards to discard vs save then delete. Any idea if I can just discard?
  • If discard without saving then nothing should change on the watch.
  • what I do is to save on the watch (fenix 3), and not save anywhere else (TR just saves on TR, and then the watch/Garmin pushes to Strava and TP).

I don't care much for Zwift, but you could do something similar.

I am running to a similar dilemma.

When riding I found myself linking my speed/cadence sensors & HRM to both FENIX 5 and Edge 820. 820 is used during ride for HUD whilst the FENIX running in the background. At the end of my ride I delete the Edge 820 activity and keep the FENIX activity for the Training Effect metric.

Now where my dilemma comes in is: training indoors.
I have the Kickr SNAP and I'm interested in introducing TrainerRoad. I want all the metrics TR will pull into Garmin Connect BUT I also want Training Effect to be recorded. I know it may sound counterintuitive given TR works off of power based performance but I am really attached to TE. Any suggestions?
  • I've been using PerfPRo Studio (http://perfprostudio.com) for many years to provide simulated power from my dumb trainer. That allows me to have TE when riding indoors. I don't have a powermeter for outdoor use.

Garmin have announced an intention to better integrate data from watches and Edge devices, supposedly going live in April.

As an interim solution, rather than deleting the duplicate Edge information, have the two devices sync to different accounts.
