Hi. The only thing I get on the screen on my xt-310 Garmin is Software loader. And the only way to get that on the screen is to hold the on/off and the arrow up buttons at the same time!! I´m totally lost.
It sounds like the firmware on your 310XT is corrupt or missing. It isn't likely that you'll be able to fix the device yourself without the help of Garmin Support. If I were in your position, I'd call them using their toll free number.
