Lap counting almost doubles my actual laps in a 25 yard pool

I have been using a Forerunner 735XT to keep track of my laps while swimming in a 25-yard pool for about five years.  Recently my wife began using a Garmin Swim II to keep track of her laps swimming in the same 25-yard pool.  She has also been counting her laps to check the accuracy of the watch.  The watch adds several laps each swim.  I swim 1.5 hours three times per week without rests, stops, with a good flip turn and only use freestyle.  The 735XT reports that I am swimming between 3.2 and 3.4 miles each swim.  After learning about my wife's watch's inaccuracy I have begun counting laps as well and find that I am only swimming 1.75 to 2.0 miles each session.  Who else has experienced this problem and what did you do to correct it?  I have followed the instructions from Garmin and updated to version 9.80, but so far nothing has helped.

  • Make sure you set the pool length to 25yds. Also, it counts based on accelerations/deccelerations. If you suddenly slow down because someone is in front of you or if you speed up to pass, it will register as a new lap. Check the length times to see if they are generally uniform. Short times in between indicate a false lap detection.

  • Thanks, Andy.  The length times are not uniform on the intervals graphical chart.  I'm thinking the problem is with the watch.  I haven't had to share a lane in years.  After a flip turn I glide about two body lengths before taking another stroke, maybe this glide is the problem?  According to the watch some pool lenghs are done in 12-18 seconds, others 30-42 seconds.

  • maybe this glide is the problem?

    A 1-second glide worked for me 100%.

Make sure that you observe all the suggestions here:

If you still don't get accurate length count, then perhaps indeed there something wrong with the watch.

  • The new lap is triggered by a firm push off. Do you know your normal (expected) time per lap? In theory if you pushed off and then glided you to a a point where you slow down and the accelerate with your first stroke that could trigger an extra length. I am guessing that is not 12-18 sec though. I flip, push off hard and then almost immediately take 3 butterfly kicks to get as much distance as possible before I take my first stroke with my non=watch hand. The counts are generally 100% correct unless I encounter an interruption. Play around with your push offs, which hand you wear your watch and the suggestions in the link by tmk2. Good luck.
