how to use forerunner 735XT for indoor sport

Hello All,

I'm using a personal profile created to measure badminton activity. I have selected GPS to OFF expecting the watch accelerometer to get some date regarding distance...

Unfortunately distance always show 0km...

What is the corect way to set a profile for an indoor sport like badminton

Should I use an external accelerometer or the watch is supposed to do it fine.

That is not very clear for me.

Regards,

  • Actually there is a 3rd party badminton app in the Garmin IQ store that is compatible with the 735xt.

  • Thanks but the real question is The watch can do it by it self (and how) as manual suggest or I need an external accelerometer.

    thanks

  • As in indoor running, the watch can use the accelerometer to calculate steps and extrapolate distance (more accurate if you calibrate steps). You could use or modify that profile. However, in a racquet sport the step lengths won't be uniform (jumps, short steps and lunges occur), so it won't likely be accurate for distance. I haven't used the 3rd part app so I don't know if it calculates distance and has an algorithm to account for this.

  • I checked and if you create "Other" profile the accelerometer is not used then no distance, but if you create a profile base on "Run" profile, it works well.

    That's odd....

  • Yes that makes sense since "other" could mean "yoga". Check that run profile doesn't use GPS since unavailable outside. Otherwise use indoor run. That said, both estimate step length. You may want to calibrate it by determining your steps/mile. However, as I said, the accelerometer would count "steps" which would be way off given the varying steps and other activity during badminton. I am not convinced you can get an accurate recording.
