Live Track not working

I have a Forerunner 735XT and iPhone. Recently the live track does not appear to have been working so I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to what might be causing this. In addition, can you see on the watch as to whether phone is connected or not?

  • On the stock watch face, if you see a small bluetooth icon next to the battery, then it is connected.

Thanks tmk2, I also use a chest HR monitor which also connects via bluetooth. I thought that the symbol on the watch face only showed that bluetooth was on not what is connected. Normally an alert shows briefly saying phone connected or HR monitor connected but if I miss these notifications then I can't see what is actually connected.

Having said this, my main concern is that the live track hasn't been working every time I have been for a run recently. This is a useful safety feature for if I have an accident or anything so it is concerning if it doesn't work every time.

No, it doesn't. The FR735XT does not support bluetooth sensors. The heart rate monitor connects via ANT+.

I thought that the symbol on the watch face only showed that bluetooth was on not what is connected.

No. The symbol shows that the watch is connected to the Garmin Connect app on a phone.

Anyway, to make sure go to bluetooth settings on the watch, and there you'll see the connection status.

Thanks again tmk2 and apologies for my lack of technical awareness. I just need to work out now why live track isn't always working!

Silly question, but does phone only connect when the app is 'switched on'?

  • Not sure what you mean by "switched on". The app needs to be properly installed on the phone, and that's about it. I don't know the internals of the garmin connect app, but most likely there's some background process running, which is required for proper connection between the app and the watch.

Not sure that I know what I mean either but I know it is possible to close an app on the iPhone and I was just wondering whether by doing this, I prevent the Live Track from working. The App, will, of course still be on the phone.

This does appear to be the case, since when I ensure the app is open Live Track appears to work fine

This appears to be working most of the time now that I have sorted the basics out thanks to your help. However there is the odd time when it still doesn't work so I was wondering whether:

    1. There needs to be a minimum level of battery charge on the Garmin
    2. There needs to be a a minimum level of mobile signal
    3. It only works for specific activities
