Garmin 735XT charging problems

I'm almost ready to throw this watch away. I haven't installed any IQ faces etc.

It worked ok originally but has got worse since software upgrades. When I plug into the PC USB the watch screen indicates that it's connected and charging but steadily discharges until nearly zero. At this point I switch it off and leave it overnight, then reconnect it to the USB port in the morning and mostly it seems to charge as you would expect, but slowly.

The charging issue is just the same when connected to a wall charging USB socket.

The PC with Garmin Express running mostly doesn't recognise that it's connected to the USB port but if I connect/disconnect a few times and try different USB ports Garmin Express will eventually recognise it but not for long and it is then shown as disconnected. The PC and all the USB ports work fine with anything else.

I've checked that the contacts on the watch and the lead are clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

John

  • Looks like hardware malfunction.

I wondered if the lead was faulty so I pinched the "grip" onto the watch with my fingers are the connection improved. So I filed down the plastic edge, next to the 4 connectors, and the watch connects much more reliably and charges. So you were correct it was hardware malfunction.

  • Although I have had charging cables go bad, what you describe was what I experienced when the battery died after 3.5 years. If not under warranty, Garmin may offer you a very discounted replacement. So far my replacement exceeds the original in battery life (10-12 days depending on gps use).
