Unable to pair Forerunner 735XT with new iPhone

I just got a new phone, and I'm unable to pair my watch with it. 

It shows up in the app, but everytime I try it fails.  I've tried several times shutting down both the phone and the watch and rebooting, bluetooth is one, etc. 

I even tried removing the device (haven't figured out how to do from the app as the instructions to hold on the device until a pop-up comes up isn't happening - perhaps this was with an older app version).

    I found the issue was that for some reason when the app is uninstalled and re-installed it loses all permissions. That way when trying to pair it always fails.

    I also removed my device from the app. Click menu button (top left) > Garmin devices > hold on device > select "remove device"

    Then go into menu button (top left) > Settings > Phone permissions > Manage permissions > turn everything to "on".

    Go back to "Garmin devices" > add new > go through the process of pairing again.  The watch can then connect.

    Hope that helps. Have been driving me mad for 2 weeks after the update!!
