Power save cuts in during exercise

Hi. New user here. Had my 735XT for six days. I thought all had set up properly, but I’m finding that when I’m exercising using the watch, the “power save” cuts in and returns the screen to the clock screen. First time was when running on a treadmill, second time was while using a spin bike. On both occasions, my heart rate was up in the “threshold” zone.

There’s nothing in the Owner’s manual to advise what to do when this happens. All it says is that power save is an economy device for when you’re left hanging around before a race starts etc. The only menu settings it has are for a shorter default period, or a longer period of about 20 minutes. There is no means to turn power save off. In both cases, i was exercising fairly hard when it cut in.

My reaction first time was to press button 2. However, at the end of my session, all that got saved was the portion before power save kicked in and I pressed the button. I reset power save after that to the longer setting, in the hope that it would save more of my next session. My reflex reaction second time was to hit button 2 again. Looks like none of that session at all got saved.

Anyone else get this cutting in while exercising? How do you get the watch straight back to your exercise display? Any comments gratefully received.

Watch is brand new, and on software 9.50.

Thanks

Tom

  • Power save only kicks in when the activity is stopped. So make sure your activity is started and running on the watch. Also check if you have autopause enabled. When autopause triggers during activity, then power save will kick in after the selected time.

    Thanks very much for this.

Yes, the activity was begun, and, as I mentioned in my post, HR was up to "threshold" level. Autopause was off. Leaves me mystified as to what happened. When Powersave kicks in, what do I do to return the watch to where it was before? There was no on-screen instruction on how to "cancel Powersave".

  • I'm not sure. The lap/back button perhaps?

Anyway, when power save triggers when an activity is supposed to be running, then there's clearly something wrong with your watch.

  • It sounds like the activity recording wasn't really running. Make sure that you really start the activity. You can see values like pace, cadence or heartrate without recording. Only after pressing the start button and the appearance of that green play sign on the screen the recording is started.

A reset to factory settings has solved the problem. As I’ve only had it a few days, I didn’t lose much. Everything of value was still on Garmin Connect when I reconnected. I ran a 5k this afternoon and everything worked properly.
