Disable Optical HRM for Runs?

I wear the 735xt daily and I'm happy with the HRM at rest and whilst cycling, but it often gives wildly inaccurate figures when running.  At some point on the run it locks into my cadence and over-reports my HR by 40+ BPM, which in turn plays havoc with the fitness calculations (VO2 max etc.).  If my actual HR was higher I probably wouldn't even notice, but being fit + mid 40s with a low max heart rate the effect is magnfied 0x.  As a result, it basically renders all the fitness calculations on the watch and more recently on Strava worthless.   I try to wear my HR strap for key workouts, but don't want to have to always wear it nor manually disable the watch prior to starting a run.

In short, I'd love to be able to choose an option to disable the optical HRM for certain exercises.  That way I'd avoid this trashing of my health stats due to the poor optical HRM performance.

Thanks,
