SWIM DISTANCE NOT CONSISTENT

Aside from the inherent inaccuracy of GPS and lap tracking, this is a problem that is internal to the Garmin watch and/or software.    the two screen shots above:

-- Garmin Connect shows the map and the distance as 2404 yards.

-- the export to CSV shows five splits that total 2198.21 yards.  This is a difference of 206  yards, or 8.5% at least.

After a swim, there are several ways to see the distance swum.

1) on the watch in several locations.

2) uploading to Garmin Connect

3) exporting splits to CSV from Garmin Connect

this question is about the discrepancy between 1 and 3, or 2 and 3.  1 and 2 agree. the exported split data does not agree with either of the watch data or the data on the Garmin Connect website.  the screen shots above show this.

does anyone know if:

a. this can be fixed?

b. which one is correct?

I've reported this to Garmin support and hope they can deal with this, but in the meantime, it'd be good to know if others have noticed this problem ...

  • Interesting. Open water watches lose signal during the underwater stroke. They use an algorithm to estimate distance taking that into account. The watch and GC readings reflect that, but it is possible the CVS data do not. That said, it is generally accepted that if you are within +/- 10% accuracy for OW swimming you are doing ok. The only way to get 100% accuracy is to put it inside your cap or attached to a buoy (you'd lose stroke info though), and if you have 2 watches you could compare the discrepancy, which differs by watch and swimmer (and possibly currents etc.).
