Nonsense - 4560 Calories Burned for 8833 steps (4.45km) (Garmin Forerunner 735XT)

Should I return my new Garmin 735XT watch?

I tried it out today, having it on all day from when I woke up until now (about to go to bed). I've been sitting around most of the day, but went to the shops at one stage during the day (about 2k steps done there) and went on a run (about 4km) and this brought my total steps up to 8833 so far. However, my calories burned are at 4560 on my Garmin 735XT! That makes no sense. My run only burned about 450 calories, so am I to believe that I have burned an additional 4,000 calories from the 6-8k steps that I did throughout the day?

For some reference - I'm currently 95kg, 183cm tall. I have my activity level set to 3 on garmin connect settings since I am mostly sedentary.

Supposedly the correct calories should be 0.04 calories per 1 step, meaning it should be 353 calories from steps + 450 from my run (and the steps during the run shouldn't be counted into the total, but not sure if garmin does this or not).

I've been doing a lot of reading on the forums - seems a lot of users have the same issue. Is there any actual solution at this point in time, other than to just ignore the calories altogether or just return the watch?

Same situation here. That Garmin watches are just piece of crap. I want to just throw it into trash. According to this watches I've made 8000 steps today which should give me 20km in total - WHAT? It overestimated my daily calories burn by 500kcal!!! That stupid nonsense.

  • If 8000 steps give you 20km then your stride isn't correct. Also check your body data in Garmin Connect and your watch.

  • According to this watches I've made 8000 steps today which should give me 20km in total - WHAT?

Please note that the total distance shown on the steps widget includes distance from all activities, not only from steps. So if you made a 10 km bike ride, then this distance would be added to the total distance travelled for that day.

What? And this is in your opinion ok, that Steps Dashoboard shows distance traveled with bicycle? That's pure nonsense. Where does have Garmin software development center? I suppose in India. Because everything in Garmin looks like implemented in India.

  • And this is in your opinion ok, that Steps Dashoboard shows distance traveled with bicycle?

I don't have an opinion on that. I really don't care.

But just to clarify, it's not only bicycle rides. It's all the activites you did throughout the day, including walking, swimming, paragliding, crawling or whatever else you did with your garmin device. So it's more like a summary of total distance covered for the day.

Where does have Garmin software development center?

    Olathe, Kansas.

Yeah of course, in Kansas, but outsourced to India.

  • If you look at job offers on the Garmin website you'll find plenty software engineering jobs, all of them in different parts of the US (so I was actually wrong about Kansas, as other states are involved as well), but none of it in India.

  • 5mo ago and no answer. Wow. I've just been offered over 1k calories for walking 5k steps. WTF? That's adding 50% to my calorie goal for getting nowhere near the basic step goal Joy

  • Check your data. Weight, maxHR, HR zones
