Calories: my buddy burns 60% more than I do

Does anyone has an idea why my good friend burns up to 60% more calories than I do when we are cycling?
We have the same activity level, age, height etc. He uses a forerunner 935 while I use the 735XT.
Only difference is that he comes in with 98kg while I am at 86.

OK, I think it needs a bit more power to move those 12kg of extra weight, but not 60%.
Another odd thing: we burn the same caloroes when running, according to the garmin measurements.

It's only the cycling...

What do I miss?

Dave
  • Do any of you have power meters?

If not, your calorie calculation will be mostly based on heart rate. So do the heart rates of both of you react equally to cycling and running?
  • Good point Allan!

I just realized that my friend had his HR function deactivated during all the cycling activities. Yesterday we went out for another activity and he switched HR on:
    • Me: HR 159, Cal 1339
    • He: HR 136, Cal 746
So that makes sence as we all know that Garmin uses the HR for Cal calculation.

But the big question remains: Why do they calculate more than 3 times of calories when HR is deactivated. I mean, they know his parameters and have reference activities from him...800 and 2800 is way off for the same activity with and without HR using.

  • I assume they use some kind of standard calorie consumption for an activity, based on speed and duration.

If I don't measure heart rate during a sea kayak trip, I also end up with far too many calories.
