Garmin's HR monitor (chest strap) goes down after an hour and a bit?

Hi all,

First of all a confession - I don't have FR735XT, but a FR220, but its subforum is closed, and the issue is with Garmin's chest strap and HR monitor rather than with the watch, which I believe works just fine.

After more than 4 years of totally problem-free use, I've found that on long runs, the HR monitor develops a problem, which manifests in two similar ways:

1. The HR reading will slowly start dwindling down rather quickly, all the way down to 90, 80, 70 and 60, and then just lose the reading at all (dashes appear on HR display and no reading at all). Photo of it is attached

2. During the long runs, the HR reading is simply lost, the watch shows as if there was no HR monitor at all for a few seconds, then comes back.

Now, obviously, the chest strap is already old, 4 years or so, so it could just be wear and tear, but what I'm finding odd is that the problem is intermittent and it happens usually after 70-80 minutes. On runs that are 50-60 minutes, no issues.

Are there any neat tips or tricks that anyone can think of, except obviously trying out a replacement chest strap?

Thanks

Hello there - i have noticed a very similar problem, and have just posted a question on this forum. I can't work out if it is my 735 or the (2yr old) HRM Tri strap, but after 70-80mins, it drops out, and the watch's internal HRM takes over. I tried changing the battery, but no luck. Did you manage to fix it?

    Hi there.

To be honest, I bought a new generic chest strap, not made by Garmin (is about £40-£50), but just some strap that works with a range of manufacturers (Polar, Garmin...), it was only £5 on Amazon. Ever since then I did at least 7-8 15km+ runs and the problem never manifested itself.

But I have to add in, ever since then I didn't really check the old chest strap. Perhaps the old one simply had a funny... period, and it wouldn't have happenned again (it happenned about 3 times), but I thought, the new one is £5, that's nothing and it's worth a try.
