735XT - GPS inaccurate on track

Hey guys,

I am using the 735XT for several month now, and, beside ONE big issue, I am completely satisfied. I am part of a running team and on every wednesday we train intervalls on track. They differ from 100m to 5k. The issue now is that my 735XT doesnt track my intervalls accurate. On a track of 400m, sometimes the difference is at least 20m (max. 50m) which is not that small. Other athletes from my team who are also using garmin products do not have that big issues. Do you guys have any idea how to improve my GPS?

I am looking forward to reading your answers!

Best,
Michael
  • I have a FR735XT paired with a foot pod, and I use it on a 400 m track regularly. I haven't really paid much attention on how accurate it is distance-wise, but I do not recall noticing any significant deviations from the 400 m distance, maybe 10 meters at most occasionally.

    Hi,
have you tried to activate the GPS + GLONAS? It's usually more accurate...
  • Are there buildings surrounding the track?

No there arent any buildings surrounding the track and I used the 735XT on different tracks - all same results! Really disappointing. During the warm-up and cool-down, which is a different route, there are no significant differences between other athletes of my team and myself.
  • You don’t need GPS when running on a track! Turn off auto-lap and manual lap at the end of an interval, use the watch as a timer. You can display lap pace and lap distance if needed, but I just count laps and go on perceived level of exertion

I know that I dont need GPS on track and I always lap manually. However, the point is that the GPS accuracy is really bad and even worse compared to the other athletes in my team who only have discrepancies of 10 meters whereas I have 30-50m.

Once you get a GPS lock, observe the pace/speed data fields and make sure the numbers are zero not jumping about before you actually start the activity.
  • In addition make sure that you disable Smart Recording and change it to recording every second - sometime the watch is a bit to clever in its attempt to save storage space.

Thanks for advise - I will try it tomorrow and let you know if other settings fixed my issues!
