Data Recovery possible? "Data Transfer Failed" message on watch, then all data lost

Help! I'd like to see if I can recover data. On Saturday at the end of a 20 mile trail race, I stopped my watch then forgot to hit save at the finish line. A bit later it said "data transfer failed" but I ignored because i wasn't trying. Then it went into save power mode, which I also wasn't worried about. I came home, went to look at my watch and the last recorded run was a short one the day before. I couldn't find it to save. It tells me I had 45000 some steps, equality the 21.6 miles of the race, but no race data. How can I recover? I'd really like to see splits. Thanks!

I'm relatively new to this, but perhaps you can still edit the .FIT file that you have (make a backup first) by feeding it to one of those online Garmin FIT file editors (for instance FitFileTools or http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl) and see if you could get the FIT file re-edited to display the correct information?
  • Something similar where my workout was not visible after I checked several hours after a long swim. However when I went into the activity on he watch itself I saw the Resume / Save / Discard screen indicating I had forgotten to save it. All was fine when I subsequently saved it. However I had not attempted to sync the data in the interim, so I can't say what would happen in that case. Take a look by going to Run and pressing start to see if it still there by chance.
