Watch froze in triathlon mode, using extended display to Edge 130

So the weekend was my first chance to test out the Garmin 735xt in a triathlon, with the extended display setup to an Edge 130.
I'm running version 9.30 on the watch, and 2.40 on the garmin edge 130
I put the edge into extended mode on the bike in transition, and left it waiting to connect to the watch.
Started the triathlon, swam went ok, on swim exit the watch seem to have gone into stop (display have press play to resume) so I did, and then hit the lap to go into T1, the display then showed the bike symbol.
On exit from transition, the lap button did nothing, no sound, no change in screen, and was the edge was not showing any watch data. I tried a few times, and the whilst riding, opted to take the edge out of display mode and start a standalone bike session on the edge.
The watch was still frozen, I couldn't remember the reset sequence whilst racing so present most buttons for about 15-20 seconds each to no effect.
I left it at that and got on with the biking, after about 10 mins I hear the watch buz and it finally moved on to the bike leg, but obviously no good data. I cycled through all the transitions to complete it on the watch, so when it came to the run leg of the transition I can record a standalone run from the watch.

Has anyone else had this issue?, do you think its more the new feature of extended display?

Any thoughts on this apricated.
  • Have you tested multisport whilst not racing?

I think its more using the extended display feature than the multisport feature. I have successfully used the multisport/triathlon mode end-to-end, before I even had an edge 130. And I've used the extended display mode with just the single bike discipline successfully (bike TT event). Without actually being in a triathlon, its hard to test genuine swim -> bike -> run, but when I get chance I'll try setting up extended display and just cycling through the activities on the watch to see what happens.
  • I thought the 735xt was not compatible with Extended Display (I've only saw the Fenix 5 and the 935 mentioned).

Try running a test out of a race (discard the data after twsting). Let us know how it goes!

Yes the edge 130 detects the 735xt in extended display mode ok. So I did a test, started the 130 in extended mode, and waited until it detected the 735xt, I then started the triathlon activity, cycled through the stages, the bike leg went though ok, connected to the edge, and on to run a finished ok. So works in principle, could have been a factor of real world conditions, pore gps signal. Or time the edge 130 is on the bike, out of Bluetooth range whilst I’m out on the swim.

How has the 735XT Garmin 130 experience been thus far? I'm in the market for a BikePC and would be interested in your recent opinion about the coupling of both products.
