Tempo Runs via Garmin Connect/Watch

Hi everyone,
I just bought the FR 735XT last month and I've been trying to understand more about its features as I go. Anyway, yesterday, I just learned that to set a Tempo run, I must add a 'workout' in GC. I did that. I gave myself 5 minutes cooling period for pre and post workout.
Now, after I completed the workout, the stats included both cooling period, thereby decreasing my average pace. It never mentioned it as a "Tempo run".

So, I would really appreciate if someone explained how to overcome this amateur problem

Thanks
  • You know that you completed the required training - does it matter what the overall average pace includes the pauses?

I update the name of the activity to include my 'main section' performance, such as 'Threshold 28min @5:24 165bpm'. Perhaps you could try that.

But then creating a tempo workout doesn't make sense then, does it? Its just a regular workout, where I keep track of the pace myself.
I thought Garmin should be able to track speeds for different types of runs IN a single workout, kind of like it does during interval running, right?

On a side note, I did do that yesterday, naming the workout Tempo run @ so-so minutes per KM :-)
  • The workout that you created and executed instructed you on what to do and alerted you if you didn't. For example one of my workouts if '12 x 1min @3:30 with 2min recovery'. That is hard for me - and hard to remember how many I have completed. But running with the workout is like a coach with a stopwatch - go too slow and it beeps. Beep beep beep - end of rep 9. Get ready for rep 10. That seems sufficient to me.

More detailed breakdown of your 'main section' is not available in Garmin Connect - you would have to look elsewhere for that analysis.

But then again, perhaps I am misunderstanding your point. You wrote initially about post run analysis but now you are querying the 'in run' usefulness.
  • I understand your point on Garmin being a coach during the workout. On that front, it does what is expected of it, and thats great.

What I was looking for was a separate post workout analysis, just for the main activity, that is the tempo run, without including the cool downs. That way I can see and track where and how many times I went past the threshold pace or where I couldn't keep up with the pace. Thats whre the 'in run' usefulness comes into the picture- I can get the analysis I want, only if it has the functionality to bifurcate the analysis.
Suppose, I added another different tempo pace in the same workout. The average pace won't help me understand how I fared, or how many times I faltered.

I can always look at the pace charts, or keep a track in the workout description,I guess. To be clear, I'm not cribbing; I'm just exploring new ways to understand my pace :-)
  • Oh, and I thought overnight, you are aware that every workout step causes a Lap and so you can see main section performance? That doesn't help a great deal though if you want to examine progression over a training season.
  • The laps function works well. However, I just log the warmup and warm down as separate runs so that the main interval is uncontaminated. Not optimal but it does what I need.
  • How about you create a new multi sport adding 3 runs, the 1st being the warm up, with the last being your cool down. That way your post workout analysis would be a separate activity which if I understand correctly is what your looking for?
