I ran 13.29 miles, however, i want to know the pace for 13.1 miles. My Half Marathon PR record is showing 13.29 total miles, when it should be just the 13.1 miles. So i was thinking total distance would be the 13.29, but the record would be just for the Half Distance itself. HELP!
  • Was this a race or just a training run? If it was a race, even though your GPS says 13.29km you should treat the start line to the finish line as 13.1 even if GPS says you ran more. If it was just a training run, then go out and do a race, you'll be quicker! ;-) Seriously, if you want the time for a HM extracted out of a run then Strava will do when you import the run, that's probably the easiest way.

  • Armani33, did your FR735XT tell you, after you completed the 13.29-mile run and saved the activity, that you achieved a new record (for a half marathon)? As far as I'm aware, on Forerunner models that support personal records detection, your fastest 21.1km – which isn't necessarily the first 21.1km – over the course of a longer run would be used to check whether a new half-marathon personal record has been achieved. (Similarly, the watch will also check whether you achieved new personal records for 1km, 5km, 10km, etc. for that run.) If one or more PRs have been achieved and detected thus, then they would be written into the activity record, and upon syncing Garmin Connect would simply accept them.
  • On Garmin Connect (not sure about the watch itself), personal records work like this:

    1) (Exact distance within non-race) If you run much farther than your PR distance (e.g. 8k total run, 5k PR within that run), then the personal record comes from the time for the exact PR distance (i.e. fastest 5k within that 8k run).
    2) (Total distance for race) If you run close enough to a race distance (5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon), then the time for the entire distance is used. e.g. If you ran 5.2k, then the time for the entire 5.2 km is used for the 5k PR.

    IOW, if you run slightly farther than a race distance, for the purposes of PRs, Garmin assumes you ran a race and determines your PR accordingly.

    Yes, Strava only does "exact distance" PRs, but IMO Garmin's way is better, because when you run a race, your PR comes from your total time, not the time that you ran the nominal race distance. For example, all my "estimated best PRs" on Strava are slightly faster than my real race PRs, because when you run a race, your watch usually records slightly more distance than the race distance.

    And yes, you can sync with Strava and get your "exact distance" 13.1 PR. But that only works if you just set a PR (or 2nd/3rd best time). In general, if you want to extract a "best X mile time" from any run, you can sync with Strava and use veloviewer.com, which can generate arbitrary best splits for you. veloviewer.com is free as long as you only want to look at recent activities.

    Note that strava can automatically sync with Garmin Connect (after one step of linking the two accounts), and veloviewer automatically syncs with strava.
