735Xt not connected

Whenever I plug the 735XT into my laptop, it shows up on the desktop as being connected and the watch charges. However, when trying to synch workouts with the watch, I get the message to connect and it says "searching" (but the spinning circle doesn't move/spin) and the watch icon at the top of page shows as "not connected." And the watch is never found (I have let it on as long as 5 minutes).
I just give up and eject the watch. Then, when I synch it with my iPhone, the workouts appear on the watch. MIRACLE!
Today I see there is an update that needs to be installed, but my watch is still not detected/not connected.
WHAT'S GOING ON? HOW DO I INSTALL THE UPDATE?
