Defect Watch or is Garmin Software Screwing things up?

The Story

For a while I have been using Beta Version 9.02 which was updated from 8.40. On doing so I had the following issues:
  • When saving an activity both outdoors and indoors the watch would continue to save without actually saving.
  • When discarding an activity the watch would remain in discarding mode and do nothing "hard reboot would bring the watch back into play"
After a week of failures I decided to carry out a factory reset, reverting back to 8.40 solved the issues until the recent update to 9.10

Current Issues Under 9.10
  • Indoor: Distance not calculated when using the foot pod "Not tried without" - I was running on a treadmill.
  • Indoor: Activities Not saving, "Saving Displayed for a long period followed by Upload Failed" when I look at the history no such activity recorded.
  • Outdoor: Both Saving and Discarding fail - i.e same as above, the watch appearing to hang but the effects of the spinning circle continue to spin.
I have tried the following with no effects:

Disabled Bluethooth
Removed all attached Sensors "HR and Foot Pod" Re Paired Sensors.

If I need to create a video demonstrating the above then I will..

Please advise!
  • Mine works relatively fine on 9.10. Haven't tried indoor running but outdoors footpod works ok. I have no issues saving or discarding activities.
Try reseting to factory defaults again, and if this does not help then I'd contact garmin.
  • One more thing to note:
I never used beta firmware and I avoided the 8.40. I upgraded from 8.30 to 9.10 directly.
  • Try resetting to factory defaults again, and if this does not help then I'd contact garmin.

Good point - Doing another ‘Clear Data’ function and will let you know how it went!

It sounds like you are having an issue with some corrupted files and not enough space to save the new activities to. Try deleting the ACTIVITIES and the MONITOR folders off of the watch and rebooting the watch. Remember if you use a Mac to delete the files you will need to clear the trash before unplugging the watch.

  • Just to add one more item to the discussion:
Yesterday I did an indoor treadmill run with footpod. For a 3 km run (as indicated by the treadmill) the FR735XT registered 3.1 km, which is not that bad, I think, for a footpod that has not been calibrated. Anyway, I had no issues with footpod distance on firmware 9.10.
  • Quick update: Carried out a ‘Clear Data’ function and all seems fine..

Will be interesting to see if future updates corrupt it again!

... with regards to corrupt files, even after a factory reset followed by an update which I did do in this case the watch still failed to function correctly. The work around for me is to carry out a ‘Clear Data’ function after a new firmware update.

I shall see what happens when we get the next firmware update.
  • Not sure why but it's starting playing up again - Continuously trying to Discard or Save an activity...
  • Going to be sending mine in for repair in the new year, I've yet to fix the problem after numerous factory resets! If I charge the watch or even connect to a computer the watch either remains in saving mode or discarding..
