Broken firmware 8.40 keeps uploading.

Some weeks ago Garmin published firmware 8.40 for the FR735XT. It's been recalled within a short time due to serious bugs and now the latest official (non-beta) firmware is 8.30. And yet every now and then (approximately once a week) Garmin Connect Mobile uploads firmware 8.40 to my watch. I always decline to update, waiting for a new fixed firmware which I hope is imminent, and I don't mind doing it, but the problem is that the upload itself takes a really long time, and I don't know how to abort it. Imagine the following case: I just completed a run and I want to upload it to Garmin Connect to review it, but first I have to wait 20 minutes, because Garmin Connect Mobile has decided to upload firmware 8.40 to my watch. Or I have created a workout and I want to upload it to my watch and start the workout pronto, but nooooo.... Garmin Connect Mobile is in the middle of uploading broken and unwanted firmware and I have to wait for it to finish.
  • Same happened with me. It stopped when I downloaded the 9.02 beta. That swapped old bugs for new ones, so hardly a solution.

You probably still have it in your sync cue. Open the website (connect.garmin.com) and sign in if you are not already. Click on the little back watch icon in the top right hand corner and look for your Forerunner 735xt in the drop down. To the right of it should be a blue dot with a number. Click on the blue dot and it should tell you what is pending. Click the "x" to the right of anything software update.
You may also have a partial file already downloaded to the watch. Plug the watch in to a computer and open it like it's a USB drive. Open the Garmin folder and look for any gupdate.rgn files. I think there could be a gupdate.tpm anyways delete any file that begins with gupdate. If you use a MAC, make sure to clear the trash before unplugging the watch.

No, I don't see it. I have only user settings in my sync queue. Anyway, this does not happen with every sync (I do sync daily) - only about once a week or something like that.

    There's only GUPDATE.GCD. It's dated Nov 9. I think that's the date of the 8.40 recall.

Ah yes that would be the Garmin Connect Download file. Get rid of that and your problems should be solved... for now.

I just got the 9.10 update so it looks like Garmin has pushed a fix. Lol we are on 9.x now 8.x left a bad taste in my mouth.
  • My watch received the latest 9.10 upgrade, so the issue ceased to exist.
