735XT with "Updating" during activity and missing data

This form may be a little clunky, but I'll take a shot at getting help anyway.

I'd like to know if anybody else has had the problem with "Updating" described below, and if there's a solution.

I have a Garmin 735XT. Every now and then (a few times a week), during an activity (swim, bike or run) I'll get an "Updating" message on my watch. During this time, I cannot hit lap (a problem when it happens and I'm ready to start an interval), and I can't seem to get out of it. Usually it self-corrects, often without repercussions. However, sometimes it results in missing data. On today's ride, I lost two miles when the watch auto-updated, and then stopped (requiring me to hit "Resume".

I've spoken with Garmin. I normally find the help desk personnel to be very knowledgeable, but on two occasions I've gotten - "Never heard of that before" and "This may occur if you don't wear the watch all day, and just turn it on and go." Well I do wear it all the time, keep it very updated, and am fastidious about making sure all sensors and GPS are updated in synced before use.

It's not just this watch either. I've had one, and it had problems with locking up and freezing, so I returned it and got a replacement. Same thing happens. So, I'm thinking it's in the firmware.

Any suggestions?

  • You will have better luck getting an answer if you post in the Forerunner 735XT sub forum rather that this one.
  • Hi Chris,
Yes iIm getting this as well. I can't be sure if its the cause of drop outs but it does seem to tie in with i am seeing.
In my case, its in a cross race. As I pass the pits, the watch hooks up to my phone which is in my rucksack and then as i pass it drops the Bluetooth connection again. This happens many times a race as you can imagine and i am seeing dropped connections to sensors at the time i am passing the pits.
You can simulate the problem as follows:
    1) Load Connect Mobile and leave open at the dashboard.
    2) Start a dummy activity on your watch.
    3) Turn off Bluetooth on your phone and wait 1-15 seconds
    4) Turn on Bluetooth again. You should see GCM connect to the watch and an Updating circle on the watch.
    5) Repeat above as many times as you like, it was 100% repeatable when i tried it this morning.

I've haven't been able to simulate the data drops, but this might be because the Bluetooth re-connection is always successful.

    Regards
    Dave
