Computer doesn't recognize my 735, but other computers do.

When I plug my 735 into my laptop (any of the 3 USB ports), the computer chimes like a new device is connected, but nothing shows up in File Manager. When I try to add a new device to Garmin Express, it doesn't find anything. If I plug the device into my wife's laptop, it is recognized right away. I've tried it on the desktop in the house too and it is recognized. So it must be something with my computer, but I'm unable to figure out what. The 735 will charge when plugged in, just not be recognized.

We're both running Windows 10, all the latest updates and drivers. I've tried different USB cables. I've downloaded and installed the Garmin Drivers as suggested in another post. I've tried to start the device in Mass Storage mode (I hold the button for about 3 minutes with no results, then the watch just boots like normal). I've done numerous factory resets. I've tried powering down and plugging it in and letting it start up that way. That only causes it to go right into charging mode and freeze on the charging screen causing me to force power down.

This is a brand new 735 I just received this morning after my old one had crashed and wouldn't boot yesterday. It has software version 7.20 (4254bef) installed.

I'm out of ideas and searching the web hasn't found anything new to help. Anyone have any other ideas?
  • Try using a USB hub, that will probably fix it.
  • Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I tried two different ones and I get the same result. Windows chimes that a new device is connected, but nothing shows up and Express still doesn't see it.
  • You could try a Hard reset on the 735 to see if that helps
  • use the 2nd part of the reset procedure (after if the above don't help, then:) on the computer where it doesn't work: https://forums.garmin.com/forum/garmin-express/garmin-express-pc/158069-

  • I've done a hard reset a few times, as well as factory default reset. Neither one lets my computer 'see' the device. I've looked in both locations for the mentioned files/directories, but they don't exist because my device hasn't been recognized for them to be created.
  • Try cleaning the charging clip and connections? Or try a different cable? If it doesn't work then phone Garmin support.

Try uninstall of Garmin Express. I did. Had a brand new 735xt last friday. Spent all week watching it freeze when connected and no device showing on home screen. Uninstalled Garmin Express completely (see Garmin Support). Reinstalled (had to use a historic version of Express compatible with my OS). Registered 735xt as device when prompted. Now have tried it a dozen times tonight. It works every time. I think it may have something to do with G Express originally being synced with my Forerunner 10.....I don't know for sure, but I suspect that an old G Express maybe doesn't install the USB drivers properly if it has been synced with a previous device....just guessing....but it works !
    Hope this helps
  • For anyone following... found the issue finally. Ultimately, there was a conflict with installed devices. I went into Device Manager, and turned on the Show Hidden feature. It showed all the different devices I had connected via USB. I went through and deleted everything that wasn't in use. Then when I reconnected my watch, it was recognized and installed. Unsure which other device was conflicting, but getting rid of them all did the trick.

Thanks for the different advice and suggestions.
    • I had the same problem and I uninstalled "Acronics true image" and the solved the problem. (I remembered that I have had similar problems with other USB-storage devices because that program)
