What's beyond the 735XT ... anything?

OK, a post for pure speculation! Nothing here should be taken too seriously, and feel free to make the discussion "just my opinion", since we don't have any actual information - so no need to remind us all about this last fact! :)

Let's begin ...

The expectation is that in a few months Garmin will release the x4x series of watches, which seems to happen on a ~2 year timetable (excluding the oddly positioned 225). These will be upgrades to the 230/235/630 running-focused watches, with whatever new goodies Garmin has in store (and probably some higher-end features already around that will trickle down).

Earlier this year we had the Fenix 5 and 935 released. These are Garmin's top-of-the-line multi-sport watches with all the bells and whistles. The timeline there also seems to be approximately a 2 year cycle (Fenix at least), meaning we can expect the next significant update in early-mid 2019.

So where does this leave the 735XT in terms of its natural upgrade pathway?

To me there doesn't seem to be anywhere Garmin can take the 735XT that doesn't already overlap with an existing (or expected) watch. Was the 735XT simply a transition product while they finalised the 935, and it will hence go the way of the 225? Or do you think there's something genuinely new/unique they can do with it that maps out its own space in Garmin's product line (a 745XT, perhaps).

What do you think?
  • What are you missing on the 735xt now?
    What would improve the 735XT?

    For me:
    * On board maps such as on the fenix5X: I think there's a slim chance of this happening in the current form factor as Garmin only shipped maps on the extra large fenix5X
    * More concurrent connect iq datafields: 3 concurrent connect iq data fields is nice and 1 more than what is available on other devices, but more than 3 would be even better :)

    Peter.
    My apps in the store
  • True 24 hour HRM (or the option to switch it on if desired) and an altimeter. The resting HR is the worst part of this watch, a complete waste of time.
    Otherwise nothing.
And the 935 is way too big, so needs to stay in the same form factor as the 735.

I was going to say what you want already exists. The 935 is basically the same size isn't it?

Audio-Cues (standalone, without connection to the phone) !!!
That's what I miss in ANY running watch!
    And 3-4 GB for music.

I hate running carrying a smartphone with me.
    But I like audio-feedback (every km/mile).
I think audio-feedback is a very underestimated feature of all GPS-watch-manufacturers.
It's one - if not THE - main reason why so many people still run with phones and apps.

The screen size is similar (935 ~1mm larger), but the 935 bezel is somewhat bulkier, making a difference for someone like me with a small wrist.

Yeah i wonder if that's going to define the next generation of watches - adding a sim card and music storage - in the same way that adding a HRM has defined the most recent generation.

There's a number that already try and do it but the battery life is pretty crappy. It'll be a few years i think before those problems are sufficiently solved.
  • What I'd like to see is something similar to 935 only based on the F5S instead of the F5. That way we get to keep (roughly) the same outer diameter for the case but get a better, and completely round screen as well as a baro altimeter. The new generation of Training Effect, Load, and Condition on top of that too.

There are already running watches in the market with those features. I was using one of those 18 months ago.

Of course, that watch sucked otherwise, and that's why I ended up returning it and getting a FR235 instead.
  • Suggest try wearing a 935 if you can. It is nowhere near as bulky as the impressions presented here. For me the 935 was the logical "upgrade" to the 735.

May I ask what watch it was?
I'm really curious now because I'm really looking for such a watch with audio cues for a long time now.
    Greetings!
