Elevation profile during course navigation

I'm preparing for a trail race in august. I downloaded a gpx course file from the race's web site and after much effort I finally managed to upload it to my watch (the process of doing it was a real nighmare, but that's a story for another thread). Now when I select "Navigation" and then select the course I can view the course on the map screen and also the elevation profile. However after I start the activity the elevation profile is no longer available. On my old FR310XT I could view the elevation profile while doing the activity, with my current position superimposed on the profile graph. Is there a way to do it on the FR735XT?
  • I've not seen an elevation profile whilst navigating a course on my 735XT so I assume that's not an option.
However, Im interested in how you transfered a GPX course file to your 735? I've largly been unsuccessful.
Also, is there a way of doing it from a mobile device (iPhone, iPad) instead of using a PC and cable?
  • I did it the following way:

    1. I downloaded the gpx file from the race website.
    2. I tried to import the gpx into Garmin Connect, but this failed, although the gpx was fine because it worked in other software.
    3. So I converted the gpx into Garmin's crs format using http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do
    4. Then I imported the crs file into Garmin Training Center (this software is obsolete and abandoned by Garmin, but still works, sometimes better than Garmin Express and Connect, and so I keep it, just in case like this one).
    5. From Garmin Training Center I exported the course into gpx again.
    6. This time the GPX imported just fine into Garmin Connect, but as an activity.
    7. Using Garmin Connect I converted the activity into a course.
    8. Now sending the course to the watch using Garmin Connect was easy and for this last step I actually used the mobile app although it also works from the web app.

This is the only way I found working. The problem is that most gpx files found online cannot be imported into Garmin Connect directly for a reason that is unclear to me. But if you're lucky enough to get a gpx that imports into Garmin Connect then you may skip to point 6.
  • Depends whether the GPX file has timestamp info. You obviously can't import something as an activity if all you have is the route. Sounds like some pseudo timestamps were added when you went through GTC.

as for your original question, don't think so. This device has no barometer of course so any elevation features like this imagine are removed as a result.

I looked into the internals of the original gpx and as you suspected it does not contain any time data. But I do not insist on importing it as a activity. The perfect solution would be to import gpx files as Garmin Connect courses and not activities. Currently Garmin Connect does not support importing courses from external files, be it gpx or garmin's own crs format. And this would seem to be quite a popular use case given that race officials usually provide a gpx course file, in many cases without timestamps.
To make the matter even more convoluted from a philosophical point of view, the original gpx file - the one without timestamps - works perfectly when uploaded to a Garmin eTrex 30 device as a course. And both Garmin Connect and the FR735XT support courses but somehow make the thing extremely complicated and unpractical.

    Indeed.

This device has no barometer of course so any elevation features like this imagine are removed as a result.

Ok, but neither the 310XT had barometer and it had that feature. Current altitude isn't required for it to work! Elevation data are taken from the course itself, and assuming that we are moving on the ground, and knowing our current 2D position, we can easily plot our location on the elevation graph, and what's actually more important, show the elevation AHEAD of our current position. This is how it worked on the FR310XT. It was super-useful for trail running because it showed you what kind of terrain (ascent or descent) to expect. I used it a lot in my past trail races when I was still using my FR310XT.
  • Well I can't say with any authority why certain features come and go but it is what it is unfortunately. The 935 has this feature if it is really important to you and indeed has superior courses support generally.
  • The 935 has this feature.

Can you please describe how it works on the 935? On the 310XT - when navigating a course during a running activity - the course elevation graph is inserted as one of data screens into the data screen carousel. Is it similar on the 935?

yes same - just get extra screens

The sad thing is that the FR735XT almost has this feature. I can view the course elevation profile BEFORE starting an activity, just next to the map view., where it's of little use. But after starting an activity, where it could be useful, there is no way to access it. This is one of several things that don't make any sense on the FR735XT. Almost as if someone who designed the thing "forgot" to include elevation profile screen into the data screen carousel.

Maybe but the thing has been out a good year now and, from memory, you are the first person that has mentioned it.
  • Thank you for your help so far. One more question: On the 935, can you zoom in/out on the course elevation profile graph?
