Mystery FTP. Where'd it come from?

Okay, here's a bit of weirdness that I can't figure out. I got a 735 last Thursday (June 1) I did an easy run that day, and then yesterday (Saturday) I did a run that triggered an LTHR value.

I didn't catch what the value was so after I got home and showered I pulled up GCM to see what the new LTHR was and noticed that there was now an FTP selection under the Performance Stats menu that wasn't there before, even when I had an F3 registered, but didn't bother looking at it because I don't cycle much.

Later I was poking around the reports on the Connect website on my iPad and I accidentally hit the FTP link when I meant to scroll when lo and behold there was an FTP result from May 29 there.

Now there's 2 things about this that don't make sense. First, I'm a very casual biker. I commute a very short distance (2.5-3.5 miles depending on the route I take) when the weather allows. I do record these rides on my watch and have a cadence sensor but no power meter which I thought was necessary for FTP. Second, the day that the FTP was registered, May 29th, I didn't have any devices with that feature on my Garmin account. The Fenix had been removed and the 735 wasn't added yet because I didn't have it.
  • Strange. Out of interest, what value was it? I think the default is 200W.
  • It's 188w.
What's even stranger is that after looking back I didn't even ride that day because it was raining. Only did a 7 mile run which is logged as a run in Connect.
  • Have you got a Stryd or any other running power meter?
  • Is it a legacy FTP value held in Connect from a previous watch that was transferred to the 735 when setting it up?

  • I'm getting a reading shown for each day I ride to work however I have no power meter connected just a cadence sensor.
  • @Tim: Nope, I don't have a Stryd the run that day was done with just my 235. No foot pod or external HRM.

@ChunkyWizard: I've never ridden with power so there wasn't, or at least shouldn't have been, an old FTP to transfer.

The only possibility I can think of is that I bought the 735 used and the FTP came from the previous owner. However the date is still problematic for two reasons. One the watch was in the postal system on the 29th, and two I did a restore defaults as soon as I unpacked it even though it looked like the previous owner had done so before shipping because although it wasn't prompting me for my stats the history and VO2Max were clear.
  • I believe you can manual input a value into Connect. Maybe you did this once and forgot about it and it synced when setting up the watch? Or maybe it's the pixies! Those are the only 2 guesses I have left ;-)

  • I'm going to go with Garminlins. ;)
  • I'm getting a reading shown for each day I ride to work however I have no power meter connected just a cadence sensor.

Interesting. I haven't gotten any power from Garmin on the couple of rides I've done since getting the 735 or any of my previous rides with the 235 or F3. Strava on the other hand does do an estimated power for any ride with HR and GPS.

Is this varying and does the value make any logical sense for you?
