Run/Walk or Interval Settings

I just received my Forerunner 735XT and so far so good. I tried to search the forum so sorry if this has been addressed. I do a run/walk. At first I just set my watch for an interval training/workout at 99 repeats. As I was reading the manual, I came across "Setting Walk Breaks Alerts" and set it up accordingly. How do I start the run/walk alerts, does it override the intervals? Also, I will need many more repeats since I will be doing a marathon and a 50k, so is there a way to do multiple workouts? TIA
  • You can't use workouts and run/walk alerts at the same time. Just use the run/walk alerts: they will start automatically and repeat indefinitely.

    Normal alerts won't work during workouts; you only get the alerts defined within the workout. The workout feature is more for structured workouts (like 8 x 800m with 2 minutes rest), not for run/walk intervals during a race (which is why there's no "indefinite repeat" setting). In a workout, you would get an alert at the end of each active/rest interval, guidance on what to do next, and a new lap would be recorded. All of that is probably overkill for run/walk anyway.

    It's the other way around. If you set up Run/Walk alerts for a given activity profile on the watch, then they would start automatically when you start the timer while using that profile, except when you select and ‘do’ either an Intervals workout or a custom (downloaded) workout using that profile.

    Keep in mind also that Run/Walk Alerts are exclusively time-based, and that alerts serve only to notify you, but does not create logical splits (i.e. laps) in the activity record, leaving you to decide when to mark laps (using the Lap button manually, and/or by your selected Auto Lap setting).

    The advantage is that the Run/Walk cycle will repeat indefinitely until you stop the timer (or the watch runs out of battery), precisely because the alert settings have no regard for distance or splits. (You can create another, different alert to let you know when you've reached the targeted total time or distance for your workout, and that will work in conjunction with Run/Walk alerts.) If you go past landmark A at 4′32″ and press the Lap button while there, but you've set up alerts to Run for 5′00″ and Walk for 3′00″, then you'll see a Walk alert 28 seconds into Lap‑2 without messing up how you want the activity record split, say only when you reach landmark B at 8′42″ (by which point you would have seen the second Run alert).

    I will need many more repeats since I will be doing a marathon and a 50k,

    I had to laugh when I saw the response for I guess I did not think it out properly. I was so focused on not being able to get past "99" and thought I would not be ready for my races. Never thought about the custom workout. I really appreciate the help and will program my workouts accordingly!! Again, thanks!!
