What is your battery life experience?

Hi all,

I know this is a topic already discussed, but I'd like to know which is your experience about 735XT battery life.

Yesterday I did a 59 km race and after 9h30 (58 km) approximately my 735XT battery was totally discharged. However, when I started the race it was totally full, I charged the battery before the race. When I was checking the time screen during the race I noticed that something could be wrong because the battery icon was changing faster than I expected.

Below you can find my 735XT setup:
  • Back light timeout set to 8 sec with any button. Obviously the back light wasn't ON during too much time while I was running.
  • Bluetooth ON (that means is searching permanently?) but neither external device connected nor Garmin Connect mobile app.
  • GPS ON in smart recording mode and GLONASS OFF
  • Wrist Heart Rate Monitor ON

According Garmin spec with GPS ON and Wrist Heart Rate Monitor ON the battery life should be around 14 h. But I'm not sure which is the concrete scenario Garmin is using for this statement.

What do you think which could be the reason of this battery gap? May be because I have the Bluetooth searching? Which is your experience with 735XT battery life?

Thanks for your feedback.

Best regards,

Miguel F.
  • I never did a full depletion (longest run I did was 6 hours). Do you use connect iq fields? As these consume extra power... (I'm using all the time the connect Iq field Peter's (Race) Pacer and using this setup I make about the same estimate of "about 10% battery drop per hour", so about-ish 10 hours of life...)
  • Thanks Peter for your response.

I forgot to comment that I have in ON the all-day activity tracking. But my understanding is that this is not affecting the battery consumption during the workout.

I just use the default data fields and some default widgets: heart rate monitor, last workout, steps counter.

I also installed this widget in order to see the battery level: https://apps.garmin.com/es-ES/apps/5a2a4c1e-9f95-4116-b61a-f8bea4ca47d7
  • I have a battery monitor data field in the Connect IQ store which writes battery level and discharge rate to the fit file during an activity for later analysis in Garmin Connect. It can be found here:

    Battery Up Down

Be aware though that if you do use this it will increase your battery use somewhat.
  • Pretty sure dcrainmaker's review did an overnight drain test.
Obviously that would be a different firmware version, but if you are seeing vastly different to that something could be wrong.
  • Hi,
Just to share wit you. Recently I started running my standard 10km with "Low battery" and when I finished after around 45 min, there was still 8% battery left.

From experience my battery is enough for max 1 week and 4 x 10 km. The watch has been turned off after every run.

    Settings like: m.fisac
  • I haven't fully drained it, but I get about 8-10% loss / hour on a run with GPS (only, no GLONASS) and the HRM-run strap. If you drained it in 9 - 10 hours that doesn't surprise me.
  • How old is your 735? Battery life will obviously degrade over time.
I would turn backlight off completely to save more battery in this scenario. If you were regularly pressing buttons then the backlight was coming on when presume it did not need to be. After GPS/GLONASS it is the next biggest drain.

The other things will have minimal impact but you may save a small amount with BT if you don't need it.
  • Hi TIMGROSE,

I bought it last December. Yes, I agree, and few days ago I turn off the backlight.

What about to turn the Bluetooth off permanently and just turn it on when I want to synchronize my data?
  • MAYOR Moda

When I first got the 735 I was pretty amazed by the battery life. It would easily go over a week.
My charges seem to have been getting more frequent so I thought I'd charge and measure.
    Installed the battery guage meter.

Since Friday (3 days) and I'm down to 67%, with 2 hours of GPS activity. Backlight is 8s, not got green lights on permanently.
So I make it that I would only get 6 hours of activity off a full charge. That is definitely lower than it used to be. Anyone else noticed anything recently? Maybe related to an update?
  • Right .... 67% down to 50% in 24 hours, with 40 min run.
    That can't be right.

I dont think I've got much in the way of apps that could be drawing power, but I guess I'll have to try a hard reset.
I seem to recall there is a battery reset procedure Garmin use, does anyone know the steps.
