Problem with HRM (optical and HRM TRI)

Hi !

I use my 735XT already for some months but in the last 2 weeks I have severe issues with HR recognition (both optical and with the HRM TRI):
I did a run yesterday which should be in my "comfort" zone (130-134 HF) but it showed a HF of 140-150 and even if I slowed down it did go up and down without any reason (my route was really flat).
Today I was at the gym and I noticed that it doesn't really get any HF values using optical. When I look at the workout on connect IQ it shows drop outs of HF for several minutes.

is my device damaged or what could be wrong ?
  • I also just tried to reboot the device and now it shows really crazy HF values while sitting on the couch (108-124) !!!!
  • Was the run with the strap or the OHR? If the former are you following the care instructions and regularly washing it?

OHR at rest will often be crazy if you are not wearing it tightly or just let it settle?
  • Maybe check your hr using one of the gym machines.
Just in case the garmin is correct!!

Hi yes the run was with the strap and yes I'm regularly washing it (normally I use cold water and every 4-5x I wash it with a little bit of soap) - are there any other instructions I need to follow to clean it as I cannot put it into the washing machine ?

The OHR was good till some weeks ago even in the gym (and I tried to wear it tightly and a little bit more relaxed but didn't see a difference) - I rebooted the device again yesterday and OHR seems better now but will see how it goes as I will have another workout today.

Yes the run was with the strap and yes I clean it every time (after the run with cold water for some minutes and every 4-5x time with a little bit of soap) - are there any other cleaning instructions I need to follow as I cannot put it into the washing machine as I did with my old Polar H7 ?
OHR was fine till some weeks ago even in the gym - I rebooted it again yesterday and OHR seems to be good again but will try it today as I will have another workout today.

thanks for the hint - will try that too - you mean that I test the strap to check if the strap is ok right ?

I meant if you are suddenly seeing changed heart rate results from 2 different sensors (strap and OHR), I'd try a 3rd.
If that is consistent with the other 2, you might want to see a doctor.

It's quite easy to measure heart rate with a stopwatch just by touching the wrist and count the beats for 5 or 10 seconds. With 5 seconds measure the heart rate won't go down too much so you get quite an accurate measure. I guess OP has done just that and after comparing to what Garmin tells he has come to a valid conclusion that garmin is simply wrong. I have had exactly same experience when cycling or skiing. I would understand a margin of 3 to 5 bpm but I in my case Garmin might show 145 when my ofn measure from the wrist is at most 120.
