GCT Balance

Just wondered what other people's ground contact time balance was showing?
Mine is pretty consistantly 48/52%. The graph is very rarely green and often red.
Is this worth working on, and if so by doing what? I dont feel any difference when running, but as I say it is consistent and I've tried 2 different straps.
Doing single leg standing exercises my right does feel weaker so will work on that, but just wondered if anyone saw 50/50 or whether everyone is a bit off center.
  • Unsure of how valid a metric it is. If you are not having injury problems then maybe there's no need to change anything. Garmin are great at throwing metrics out there but I suspect mostly for marketing purposes. Not too sure even of the accuracy of it. I do most of my running on trails yet consistently see around 50/50.

  • My imbalance usually stays within 0.5%, although I have noticed this change with growing fatigue or increased power (like sprinting uphill). Then my weaker leg starts to spend more time on the ground.
  • I have had a left Achilles injury for a little while and in the first 10 minutes of runs, I have been seeing a big bias to the right (say around 45-55%) as if I was struggling to put weight down through the left. This tends to even out to more like 50-50 once I have got looser. I am trying to use this as some sort of clue as to whether I am recovering after taking some time off running in the last few weeks. Generally though it does flip around a bit on runs. Unless it gets to over 2% bias for an extended period (as my example) I am not too worried.

I agree with previous comment in that even if you see a bias but feel OK then would not be too concerned. That said try and correlate it to how new your shoes are, wear indicators on the soles, where you are running (e.g. is it on a camber!) and if in doubt get a physio to check you out.

I have struggled a lot with injuries at my pelvis the last year or so. For me it is a VERY important metric! When I am starting to see larger differences between left/right it is usually when I have been injured or am close to getting injured again!
  • On the road I typically am right around the boundary for getting orange which is >.7% with a bias toward my right side, while on trail runs I'm almost always 50-50.

I don't consciously change anything when I run in the trail but it changes a lot. I even do better on the road when I'm running at least once a week on the trail.
  • Thanks for the updates.
It does sound like it is an indicator of something not quite right then, as I'm way over what you guys are.
    Typically 51.5 to 52%.
It seems worse at the start of runs, and perhaps gets better as that leg loosens off. It also seems to go to 50/50 when I'm running uphill, which suggests perhaps one leg is a bit lazy when it doesn't need to work.

I'll carry on with various strengthening exercises. I have mentioned it to a physio I've seen but she doesn't think its a big enough disparity to really look at. And she is perhaps correct, but it is definitely consistent.
  • My results are typically 48-52ish...right is my stronger leg, but it is also longer--not sure if that impacts the metric. It is the same on a treadmill, the road and on trails. Starts out near 50-50 or 49-51, then settles at 48-52. Not sure what to make of it.
  • I know this post is old, however, I've experienced something similar with some findings.  I had the dynamics pod which attches to the shorts, and the balance was in green most of the times.  I changed it (warranty issues with the pod) for the strap and it changed inmediatly (one day to another) to orange (~48/52), so I made a test, I put the strap very low on my right side and the metric started changing.  So now I look at the mirror when I put the strap before going outside to make sure it is even.  The metric has changed so little but this is something to be aware of, there's an error margin on that, and you could work on strenghtening, that works. Hope this works for you and would be great if anyone else can give any insight.
