Laps/Splits

I've just created a simple 5K workout.

Warmup until lap press
Run 5K
Cooldown until lap press.

When I finished the run it marked it as my quickest 5K time, which is OK for now, as its a new watch.

But when I look at the activity I cannot get the 5K time from it. The splits are either a mile, or a small distance between the previous mile and me hitting lap to start, or a small lap time at the end of the 3rd mile before the 5K ended.

OK, so I could add the 3 splits up, but surely it must be possible to find out the stats for the whole 5K period of the workout? Am I missing something?
I've looked in web based and mobile GC.
  • The section of the workout which is responsible for the personal best is not marked in any way in the activity. Personal records are calculated "on the go" by the watch and after uploading the activity to Garmin Connect there is no simple way to determin which section was the fastest.

Thanks, but perhaps I compliccated the question by even mentioning that.

What I want to know is, how do I find out how long the run section of my workout took, and what my stats (avg pace, avg HR etc) were for that section/split?

    Cheers
  • Oh, I see.
I understand that the 5k section of your workout was split into smaller sections, probably by the autolap feature, which automatically marks splits at 1 mile intervals. In that case I don't think there is a way to find out stats for the whole 5k section other than cumulating them by hand. Garmin Connect does not differentiate between splits marked by autolap or by reaching the end of a workout section. Garmin Connect is not even aware that the activity has been run along a programmed workout.
  • Thanks.
Sounds like I need to turn the auto lap off to get what I need then.
Pity connect can't cope with both splits and laps as it would be handy to break the sections into sections also if that makes sense.
In fact it would be nice to be able to select any periods within connect and have the stats for that period. It wouldn't be that difficult to do. For instance you should just be able to select the bottom and top of a hill on the map and see stats for that bit. Like I say, it isn't rocket science.
  • On the 920xt autolap is disabled during a workout so I would have thought the same here. Post a link to your activity.

Maybe the workout isn't the best way to achieve this.
Basically I want to a 5k, or whatever distance, and look at the stats. But I would like to do a warmup and cooldown, which whilst I am not interested in stats would be good to add to my total mileage.
  • Try it with auto lap disabled and see if you get the same result. Granted I don't have auto lap enabled on my 920 but this is what I got after a custom workout on Wednesday - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1562803408

I don't see anything wrong with using a workout. The ‘problem’ is with wanting to get granular per-km (or per-mile) stats as well within a single contiguous step in an activity.

So disable auto-lap, and your basic requirement will be met.

Not a problem, when your activity record will then have exactly three splits – warm-up, run, and cool-down.

However, if you must see per-mile breakdowns for whatever reason, you can always just record separate activities for warm-up and cool-down, and have an activity that reflects the 5km run (and nothing more) in the middle with auto-lap enabled. Problem solved.
  • Arggh. Just gone for another normal run and forgot to set the auto lap back on.

I think I'm sorted though, I never realised you coud add new activities. So I've copied the run to a Run Workout profile and disabled the splits there.

In fact I'll probably create a few now for various settings and alerts. Now if only you set the backlight settings in the activity and have a day/night profile I'd be happy.

Thought I'd mention it in case anyone else hadn't realised you can do this.
