Multiple Waterproof failures FR735XT

Hi there.

Have just had this watch replaced by Garmin for the fourth time. It's the same issue every time : screen goes completely blank during swim and the watch never responds. Just interested to hear any thoughts.

Have several friends who have it experienced any problems. Initially thought I may have been the wall charger but this appears not to be the case.

I wear the watch on the inside of my wrist (it faces inside my arm) can possibly be the only thing I do that nobody else does. Hard to say how this may cause failure other than pointing to a pressure/water proof issue.

Just to be clear, I am a professional who lap/ocean swims, rides on rollers and runs outdoors. Have owned many watches over two and a half decades of ironman tri (Mainly Polar as I was once sponsored but their product quality dropped about 10 years ago).

Interested to hear some genuine thoughts. Sadly Garmin have never replied to my questions as to what they've found in their testing of my failed units.
  • That's not how it is specified by Garmin, though.

In my view it's either waterproof to 50m or not.

">‑735XT product specifications">Forerunner‑735XT product specifications on Garmin Australia's web site:

(Garmin has recently implemented blanket auto-redirection based on the Web site visitor's geographic region based on IP address, at least for Australia, so now the ‘Water rating’ link is effectively broken. What a harebrained ideato effectively putting geoblocking in place, and making it difficult for Australians to access for reference web pages that Garmin has published facing the North American market.)

(To get around the lame geoblocking) Google's cached copy of the ‘Water rating’ page states,

You should note that even if a device is above a depth it is rated for, it might still suffer water ingression if it is subjected to an activity that creates pressure on itthat exceeds that depth rating.

and then, Google's cached copy of the ‘Water Rating Definitions’ page states,

5 ATM
Withstands pressures equivalent toa depth of 50 meters

so it was always about a measure of pressures, and not how deep underwater the Garmin device is physically.
  • I used my 735 for the first time in lap swimming and water got inside, Not sure what I should do. I thought it was water proof.

My watch went dirty, the silicone gas becomes warm and the water gets in.

Did you press any buttons when the watch was submerged?

If not, then this should not have happened. Contact garmin support and you will get a replacement.

Wife pool swam with her two day old 735XT. Screen started showing green banding then the back-light failed. It's on its way back to Garmin UK as we speak.....
