735XT + Cold weather

Hi,
Yesterday cycle was about 4-5C. Not too cold. Watch was on the handlebars. Battery was something like 58% before I went out, it was 12% when I finished, so maybe I should have charged it first as I'm aware cold weather + batteries dont mix too well. However, it wasnt that cold, lots of people use Garmins in sub zero temps. My watch shutdown mid ride and required a power on and resume. It then powered off 4 times at the end of the ride? Anyone else experiencing this issue? No issues in the past with my old 305 and 310XT watches.
I factory reset my watch last Friday as I have a support case open already due to bad OHR readings.
Thanks

    Doesn't seem right.

    I'm currently running 55-60 km a week outdoors in -5 to 5°C.

Charging once a week with about 25-30% battery left.

    Never experienced a shutdown.

24/7 OHR, activity tracking, notifications, and Bluetooth.

I'm using the HRM4-run strap when running though, for better accuracy.
  • I do recall other reports of the watch turning off in the cold despite seemingly having some battery left. I think the "morale" was to try and set off in cold weather with a topped up battery if you can.

I will charge it fully next time, but seems pretty poor if it cant handle a mild British winter! I'm using HRM strap from my old Garmin as the OHR is pathetic.
TBH I was really excited about getting this watch and the smart functionality+bluetooth+OHR, but its proving to be quite a let down. I hope its just my watch and Garmin replace it. I have been using it since mid Oct. 80 activities and the last 5 or 6 have been faulty (OHR or shutdown) :(
  • It is totally affected by cold. I wore it on the outside of my sleeve during a 0F ski race. 100% charged at the start, and it shut off 30min into the race. I wear it inside my sleeve now to keep it warm.
  • SUPERFLI69 What was the windchill? On the handlebars, airflow more cooling than ambient air. Still, hard to see it getting below -20C. Interesting to see in the manual that key tones and alert tones are turned off in cold weather. Doesn't say what temperature triggers that though

I will guess that with a windchill it was about -2 or so. Much colder and I would really notice it myself! I was out last night in very similar conditions. However, I had my Garmin on wrist+using OHR this time. OHR was typically carp for the first half of my ride. The watch did not turn off though. It was covered by my sleeve and on my arm, so a lot warmer. Interestingly my mates Garmin Edge 820 I think, turned off and it was fully charged! So, a common issue.

It seems the modern Garmin's are fine as long as you dont exercise too hard ie sweat, or go out in cold weather. Good for Pilates then :p

I have an RMA form and mine will be going back for replacement this weekend.
