Auto-lap off during workout

I would like to suggest that Garmin introduces a third setting for auto-lap:

1) Auto-lap ON
2) Auto-lap OFF
3) Auto-lap OFF during workout

I understand that one can make a custom running profile with auto-lap off that can be used during workouts or turn auto-lap on and off but in reality this becomes tedious as one can easily forget to switch the profile before you start a workout etc. On top of that you have to keep replicating data screens between two profiles ...
  • I use a lot of the Hanson plan workouts, many of which involve intervals longer than one mile as well as warm up and cool down segments that are 1.5-3 miles and I always wished that I could get mile splits when I was using the 220/225 but wasn't too bothered over it.

Then was pleasantly surprised when I did start to get splits when I my first workout with the 235 when I wasn't expecting that behavior to change. Conversely I was disappointed when I recently picked up an F3 and didn't get the splits. Somehow I figured that the workout feature would've been changed on the older devices so that it worked the same across the whole range of devices that supports it.

It never occurred to me to make workouts that broke segments greater than a mile into separate steps to get the same effect.

Generally these sort of changes are "forward only" unless you might need to make changes to keep up with Connect IQ releases and even they are limited on hardware.
Kind of makes sense as else how far back would you go. I got my first Forerunner in 2004.

Also a lot of the "older" devices are probably at memory limits and what might appear a "simple" change may actually render a stable device unstable and we "love" that (not!) don't we...
  • Just came along this thread.
Don't think this issue will be fixed or setting "off during workouts" introduced.
230/ 235 community had been asking for that for a year at least(time from realease)
  • They changed to allow for the people who do want auto laps in intervals - especially relevant if say doing a long tempo run and you want your mile splits (I would) but you want to include specific warm up/down steps.

I hear you TIMGROSE and I *also* want splits during a 2 or 3 mile tempo run, that's totally understandable.

That said, I do have a lot of workouts that are time-based and quite often the end of the interval can be right after a mile split so you get a mile and a few yards which is pointless.

I guess a different proposal would be to add the auto-lap setting as part of the custom-workout online tool. Meaning for each "running step" you add in the workout, you can select if you want it to be auto-split or not.

What do you guys think about that?
  • That sounds like a good idea. Just have a toggle switch in the interface for building workouts that allows auto lap to be disabled for that session at least.

    Exactly!
  • it happened again today :-(

i had to do 1.25mi intervals with 90s recovery for today's workout and guess what? I forgot to manually turn off the stupid auto-lap.

as a result, i ended up with 1mi + 0.25mi splits instead of 1.25mi laps which is so stupid.

why can't garmin automate this setting? it is so unbelievably annoying (not to all of us of course)

So why not couch it the opposite way, such that by default running (that is, using the primary Run activity profile) is without auto-lap, but running with auto-lap enabled requires the use of a user-added custom activity profile? That way, if/when you want auto-lap, 1.‑you need to make a more conscious decision to select it, and 2.‑even if you forget, you could still manually mark laps if you discover your oversight mid-run, and see average pace calculated over shorter distances than your entire run.

I'd hazard a guess that would be the “lesser of two evils” from your perspective, and a far easier outcome for you to achieve personally, than trying to exert leverage you don't have in making Garmin do something different to accommodate your preferences now.

Personally I don't use auto-lap at all, and just press the lap button whenever I want to capture and see stats on my watch for a given section. It actually annoyed the hell out of my gf and myself when I factory reset my old FR235 and gave it to her to use, and set up (as it turned out, far from completely) my new FR630, only to find both devices had auto-lap enabled on our first run (which, by the way, was not a custom workout) after that event, so I understand the frustration, but neither the desire for auto-lap (especially as an option enabled by default, as if that was ‘natural’ or more common as a want than not) for freeform outdoor runs, nor the expectation that Garmin should respond by changing the firmware just because our forgetfulness tripped ourselves over metaphorically from time to time.
  • > why can't garmin automate this setting?

Sometimes I have started to run and forgot to press the start button!
Sounds like you need to setup a profile for intervals only.

In the past I created a profile for intervals with auto-split off but the problem is that not all intervals are the same. For example, I have tempo sessions that might be 2mi or 3mi repeats in which case I want to see the auto-splits but when I have 1.25mi or 1.50mi tempo repeats I don't want to see auto-splits.

Moreover I have pyramid intervals that start long and slow and get shorter and faster. In those cases the long intervals could be auto-split but the ones that are between 1-2mi shouldn't.

I believe that the solution we have discussed (and gained traction) above is to have an auto-split setting as part of the Workout Creation tool online. It could be as simple as a checkbox labeled auto-split next to the interval in question.

I understand that this is a pretty esoteric request but the 735xt is supposed to be the ultimate running training tool and it's supposed to get out of the way ...
