Indoor running 735XT accuracy

Hi,
I've just bought my new 735XT watch. Excellent watch. While doing running workout on treadmill ("Run Indoor"), the watch shows inaccurate values of
pace. Watch shows pace of 4:07 min/km while actual should be about 4:30 min/km. Same inaccurate on different treadmills. all my personal parameter are set.

Is it possible to modify and correct the pace to fit my running style ?
I assume it associates with accelorometer algorithm vs my running style somehow.

  • This pace is modelled from observing your arm swing to your pace relationships in outdoor runs. So you may need to run outside more.

    That said it is not hugely accurate and for best results on a treadmill a foot pod is best.

    Thanks for your prompt reply. Actually I started on treadmill before running outside and I believe that is why I got some inaccuracy.
    I guess I have to wait for nicer day to "calibrate" my running style.

  • It is totally inaccurate using hand movement, footpod or HR band (Tri or Run). It also keeps changing; for me it is mostly showing slower speed than the treadmill, but it changes all the time.
    Keep in mind it is only based on cadence, so you can easily manipulate it by increasing cadence while running the same speed.

    I use a Proform treadmill which is connected to their iFit platform, so I can download a TCX file after workouts and import into TraningPeaks (in addition to the fit file that comes from Garmin connect). Then I select the file and hit Recalculate. TP then overrides the speed/pace and elevation gain to use the treadmill's data instead of the watch.
    Of course, the treadmill is not 100% accurate either, but closer to actual pace (to the best of my observations of HR) and consistent.
  • Foot pod is the better than just the watch and a Garmin HR strap does not do pace anyway. If you calibrate a foot pod to your normal pace then have found it is not far off at all and does not change much - well unless you do.

    Foot pod isn't a step counter per se so changing cadence but keeping same speed (which is very hard to do as most people have a natural rhythm) should not have a huge effect.
  • I have found the Garmin foot pod to be reasonably accurate over pace ranges when calibrated properly. I use to use 2 calibration factors, one for slower runs and one for faster and then it was accurate within about 1% or so. I have switched to the Stryd power meter footpod and this, when installed properly, for me is within 0.5% over a range of paces without any calibration.
  • Yeah I find my Stryd is consistently 0.1 to 0.3 kph slower than my gym's treadmills at any pace from slow jog to as fast as I can go in a short sprint!

    It does then appear to be need "some" calibration to be spot on (and outdoor runs confirm that) but the default calibration is at least in the ballpark and I only use it for pace indoors.

    Not to belabor the never ending foopod vs treadmill accuracy debate, but I am guessing you mean on more than one treadmill and therefore you trust their accuracy.

    Well yeah good point. The treadmills at my gym are all the same model (Life Fitness 95T) and have used several now with the Stryd and am getting consistent results. And gut feeling from a runner of 35 years standing is that it "feels" about right.
