Lactate Threshold Guided Test

So I did the guided test for lactate threshold on my 735xt. Had my garmin forerunner 15 heart rate strap on and connected and had auto detect "on". Did the test and stayed if not in the middle of the green threshold, to the top. My max HR is set to 185. The test ended up failing and my watch indicated Threshold Not Detected. Anyone have any idea why the test failed. I do have a theory:

For the last three minute interval, I was at the bottom of the green threshold, but still in the green. Looks like I was at around 177 HR. My max HR is set at 185. Did the test fail because my max HR is set to high and I actually never hit the 185? Should it be set lower, maybe to 175 since that is actually what it's supposed to be doing the 220-age calculation?

However what doesn't make any sense is that auto detect was "on" so, doesn't that take care of max HR calculation?

Any help would be appreciated. This test is a pain and I'd hate to do it again and get a fail message again...
